I have a question about windows NT, maybe someone could help me out. On a
NTFS
volume, how is it possible to unlock a locked file. For example, I was
working on
a station in MS word and I saved the document to a NTFS volume on a server,
somehow the power went out before I closed word. As a result the OS
locked the file and if you try to delete or append data to the file on the
server, it reads "access denied" even to members of the Administrators
group.
One way I got around this before was to give the everyone group 'no access'
permission to the file, the OS would then disconnect users of the file
and I would then restore the original permissions set and delete the file.
But this error I got today would not allow me to do that. It will not allow
me to change permissions of the file. Its so locked
that I can't even view the permissions for the file, I tried restarting,
still wouldn't do it. This file has been locked for over a month and I need
to delete it. Maybe someone could give me some words of experience.

You can try running the NET FILES command from the server.

NET FILE [id [/CLOSE]]

Try taking ownership of the file in admin mode to wrestle back control of
it. I did this one time and it worked for me. Rob

As an Administrator, take ownership of the file, then make the changes
to the security settings. You might also consider a chkdsk to make
sure the file system didn't get trashed during the power outtage.
