4.4 Windows 2000 Could Not Start Message
-----------------------------------------
Some computers may fail and display a message informing the user
that "Windows NT could not start because of a computer disk
hardware configuration problem.Cannot read from the selected
bootdisk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the
Windows NT documentation about hardware disk configuration and
your hardware reference manuals for additional information"
after text mode setup.
If this happens, edit boot.ini in the root of the drive and
change the signature(xxxxx) to multi(0) and restart the computer.
The fix info, I guessed at what the meant as it is worded very badly, is to
change the contents of boot.ini from:
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=signature(c8d3)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
signature(c8d3)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
changed to:
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
And the rest of the install proceeded without error. I did notice that I
now have a Multi-boot screen offering Windows 2000 and DOS.
Now, here's my question: Does anyone know, or can figure out, if there is
an option during the setup which, if checked, would result in the second
copy of boot.ini above:
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
instead of the first one:
default=signature(c8d3)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
signature(c8d3)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
