I'm setting up a LAN using Windows NT Server/Workstation.

So far I have installed NT Server on the Server, I haven't converted the 95
workstations as yet, but i've got them seeing each other over the workgroup.

So the 95 workstations are seeing each other and the Server is seeing each
of the stations, but none can see the server, including the server...I
figured it out...The SERVER SERVICE cannot start because quote ....

"SERVICE SERVICES CANNOT START BECAUSE YOUR SERVER DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH
STORAGE SPACE"

But...i've got a 9.1GB SCSI Hard Drive Plus an 8.4 GB IDE 64MB SDRAM and
Dual Processors @180MHZ each

Another thing I have noticed interesting is that If I do a "FIND COMPUTER"
on the server and put in the server name it finds the computer (server) but
that doesn't work on any other computers in the workgroup

I really need help....urgently...my server's down, i need payroll
SATURDAY..can someone email me an answer or any more questions so I can get
this fixed...thanks in advance

Hi,
do you create Useraccounts (with the right to connect via Network) and
do you create Computeraccounts
for _all_ 95-Workstations on the server ?

The Workstations must be in the same NT-Domain (thats not the internet domain)
not in a workgroup!

Everything (and I mean everything) you need to know is at
this excellent site:
http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/kime/directcc/

The bad news is that NT RAS only supports serial
connections which is slow, slow, slow.

The good news is that there are links on the above page
to several commercial solutions.

BTW, almost all questions are requests for 'help', so you
might try to be a bit more imaginative in your Subject:
line next time. "Help me please" is not particularly useful,
but "how do I connect NT to 95 by cable?" is good.

There is no way of doing this; I would recommend that you purchase a pair
of ethernet 10-base-T cards (you can get these fairly inexpensively now),
and a crossover cable, connect the two machines together like that, and
you'll have a setup which is many times faster and less resource-intensive
than a parallel port setup.

I agree, a real network is the best way to do it. But, while he can't
exactly do what he wants, wouldn't it be possible to do something
awfully similar, with Laplink and a laplink cable? I've networked two
95 PCs this way lots. Does Laplink not run on NT?

LapLink runs fine under NT. You can't beat a real network, though, and you
can set one up (using, for example, cheap NE2000 clone cards) for under $50
if you shop around.

Nobody of you mentioned the possibility to install Direct Cable Connection
(it's a standard Windows95/98 component, I think it requires Dial-up
networking installed as well). The Direct Cable connection can be
established through serial ports (COM1, COM2) AND through parallel port
(LPT1). You'll gain a network-like connection between two computers except
that only one computer can share its folders.

The original poster specifically said that he wants a connection between a
Windows 95 machine and a Windows NT machine. Please correct me if I'm wrong,
but to the best of my knowledge "Direct Cable Connection" can't be used for
this.

You can get Direct Cable Connection with NT.

First if it isnt installed, you have to install
the "Hyperterminal" - tool from your NT - CD.

With that tool you can establish a Direct Cable Connection
via a COM-Port (up to 128000 bps).

to
1) install and configure NT RAS (under NT, sure ;-)
2) install drivers for NULL modem (under NT AND W95)
3) run "Direct cable connection" under Win95

I think it works fine.
