I would like to share with you a very bad experience that I had with US
Robotics:
I bought a Sportster 33.6 modem model 840 before their deadline of
so-called free upgrade to 56Kpbs and $20 rebate. Now I have two problems:
The first problem is that the flash hook feature of that modem doesn't work
which prevents me from calling into work smoothly. I contacted their
tech-support through Internet email and all I got back was that they will
look into it, but nothing further ever since. Also, the modem sometimes
cannot be initialized correctly at the first time after I start my
computer. I am not really satisfied with their support effort.
No the second problem is that after I sent in all the free upgrade and
rebate paperwork, they now finally responded after six weeks with a piece
of cheapy postcard claiming that they did not receive a valid sales
receipt! They ask me to resubmit before the deadline of 05/03/97.
Resubmit what?! I have given them everything in original and I don't have
anything in original to "resubmit".
To me, this is just a scam that US Robotics trying to trick customer like
me to buy their junky product that they try to get rid of before the end of
the year with fancy packaging and marketing materials such as "free upgrade
to 56K", and "$20 rebate", etc. Now customer like me is the "definitely
lose" situation because I have given them the original receipt already and
I have nothing in my hand to resubmit as "original". Now I can't even
return the product although I didn't get what I paid for which includes
that so-called rebate and so-called free upgrade.
So for those of you who are thinking about buying a US Robotics modem,
please think again because you might be the next victim. I have heard of
similar story like this about other companies but I can never believe that
US Robotics, a previously very reputable company, would do something like
this to a value customer like me because this is the second time that I
bought a modem from US Robotics.
US Robotics, you better look out because you are now dealing with a very
angry customer and I am going to continue distributing this email to
everywhere and everyone that I can think of, and let all the people in the
world know about what kind of treatment you give to a value customer like
me. Think about how many people are connected to the Internet! I will
make you very famous of bad service and bad support!

I also bought a 33.6 Sportster and was supposed to get a $20.00
rebate. Saturday I received a post card that said I was out of date
for the rebate. I was mad and I returned the modem to Best Buy and
bought another brand.
Now I ask you, Which would have been better? Sending me the $20

Hmmm. e-mail support still needs some work, wherever you go. Call
their tech support line, or better yet, read the manual thoroughly to
ensure that you are using the correct init string for the modem (very
common issue). If you're certain that it's a hardware failure, take it
back to the retailer.

This is why you should always submit a photocopy of receipts for
rebate entitlement. The US Mail is not always 100% reliable, and
usually, these firms use clearinghouses to process the rebates. I
submitted my documentation to USR and had my rebate within 3 weeks.

Now come on, Robin, is it really USR's fault that you mailed off your
only receipt to them? The role of "victim" is so easily played, isn't
it? Let me share a secret with you - peripheral manufacturers run on a
very low gross margin, and unles you are buying in bulk, your threats
of "never ever ever buying another brand X product" really do not
matter to them. USR makes a good quality product (I've been using USR
since 2400BPS as have most of my friends).

Maxell seems to have the same scam going on with their $30 rebate for
their 100 pack disks. I bought 2 boxes at separate dates, sent the
rebate in about two weeks apart. I received one rebate, and the other
was replied with a postcard stating that they had not received a valid
sales receipt. The postcards looked identical, so they must be using
the same clearing house.
About 20 years ago, I was burned by Star over a printer I purchased for
my Commodore!!!! and have avoided them like the plague ever since. USR
and Maxell just went into the same bucket. I hold grudges so I have
purchased my last USR modem and maxell disk.
Over the last 5 years, I have purchased 15 modems, ZyXel, USR, Zoom,
Boca, etc., so I hope USR enjoys my rebate money, it's the last they'll
see!
This is what I dont understand. Alot of people pick up USR Sportsers
and the complain when they run into problems and then make
generalizations claiming that ALL USR modems are crap. Sportsters are
stipped down modems. I wouldnt trust one of them more than I would a
Packard Bell PC. Here is a little advice, spend a few extera bucks and
get the Courier V. Everything. The Couriers are Flash Rom upgradeable,
are the fastest modem on the market, are the most reliable modem on the
market, and is the most used modem by BBSs and ISPs. The Curriers offer
free lifetime firmware upgrades. The upgrades are also timely. I had
my X2 firmware 2 weeks before any X2 servers were put on line. USR
makes the BEST modems on the market, however they also make some crappy
ones too. Be smart and buy the good ones.

A long time ago, I had a U.S. Robotics modem (14.4k). It was too
flakey for my needs. Sometimes I would have to dial in 15-20 times
to get the modems to successfully negotiate a handshake. I finally
gave up, switched to SupraFax and haven't had a problem since.

Bob

Sorry to crosspost to so many groups, but I don't know where the
various participants in the thread are reading this. US Robotics did
not demand the original of my receipt. I submitted a copy. I was
unable to submit a 16 digit serial number, because the 1172s came with
only 12 digit serial numbers, and USR tech support was unable to come
up with a coherent explanantion of how to find 4 more digits, although
they did later as I got ready to mail in a different form. I did get
a refund, although it took several weeks longer than the 6 to 8
promised. My experience with these rebates is that generally 1 in 5
results in a check being delivered to my door, regardless of which
manufacturer is involved. Given the expected return, the effort, and
the postage, I no longer bother sending them in for less than 20
bucks. At any rate, picking on US Robotics is probably unfair.

I Have no Problems with my Sporster voice Modem Whatsoever... I too did the
turn in the receipt for free upgrade to 56k. I got a response 1 week ago...
took 6 weeks. I figured it was due to the enormous response they had. The
Down side is I now have to wait for them to contact me and tell me when to
send my modem to them to upgrade. Well ..Such is Life!
Take Care
I can say nothing about your experience, but I have a high opinion about
USR-support.
I bought an early version of the Sportster a few years ago (in Belgium,
Europe) and was not pleased with the performance. I checked the Internet
and found out that the early Sportsters had some bugs (the spiral death
bug etc.) and that USR would replace these early ROMs for free, at least
in the USA. So (more than half a year after my purchase) I sent them an
email about this. To make things short: one week later I had a new
ROM-chip at home, for free. The modem works very well since then... and my
next one will be a USR.
Maybe you could send them an email as well and hold on until you got the
right person... .

Steve was right in an earlier post. When you mass market an item and
ship 10's or 100's of thousands, you're going to end up shipping some
that are less than desirable in quality. Spend a little more and get
a little more.

Sounds exactly like the USR Courier I bought in 1994 for $250. It is

Ah. So we aren't getting joy with USR because we haven't thrown
enough money at them.
FYI, Sportsters are *already* more expensive than many other
hardware-based, non-Windows-dependent, PnP-proof modems. And if USR
can't make a useable modem (your assessment) for more money than
workable generics, why bother with 'em?

Well, I must of got lucky.... `cause I just received my $20 check from
USR's promotions co last week. Of course, I sent xerox copies of my
Proof of Purchase. Perhaps they're targeting the ones who send the
originals? ......they know the customer can't resubmit?!?!
Anyway, I noticed at their WWW site that they are charging $60 for the
X2 update to the Model 1125's. I, too, was suppose to get a free
upgrade with my Sportster purchase. But, I haven't received any
follow-up from them regarding my application I sent with the rebate
form. Perhaps I'll start looking in to it......

I have used U.S. Robotics modems for years, all have given me
excellent service. I have recommended them to several friends who
bought computers with crap modems. In every case, there connection
problems went away with the installation of a Sportster modem. As a
matter of fact, in response to your message I went out and bought a 56
kbps Sportster that I had been considering. As I write this now I am
connected to my ISP at 49.33 kbps. I'm sorry you have problems, but
U.S. Robotics makes a good product and the few times I dealt with

I still beleive that Sportsters are better than most other "Best Buy"
and "Circuit City" variety modems. And yes, they cost a bit more. But
they are still stripped down when compared thoes chosen by ISPs and BBSs
as well as the users who like a bit more power. That does not mean they
are that much more expensive. I got my Courier V Everything over two
years ago on a deal for about $170. For a 28.8 that was a fair price.
Now I run the same modem at just under 55.6 with no problems. sure I
spent about $50 more than other 28.8 modems were going for but I I just
downloaded new firmware to make my modem faster. All the people who
bought the "Best Buy" variety modems are pretty much stuck with their
28.8s or they paid $$ to upgrade. I think the $50 was worth it. Not to
mention, I have the most supported, fastest, and most reliable modem on
the market. I have had 8 modems since the days of the 1200 bps modems.
I have had Hayes, Mot., USR, as well as many of the lower priced
modems. From what I have seen, you get what you pay for.

I live in the "boonies" with lousy phone lines. Thanks to Office Depot's
liberal return policy, I tried 8 different modem brands/models before settling
on a Motorola -- the only one that handles all the garbage my phone lines put
out without major problems. Of the modems I tried, Modem Blaster handled line
noise the worst, the 2 USRs, a Sportster and a Courier V.Everything, tied for
2nd worst. IMHO, you don't always get what you pay for.

Interesting....
I also live in the "boonies" with those legendary terrible phone lines (I
also throw several phone extensions at it just for fun :-). Also have
tried several modems (tho not the Motorola) and found the Courier
V.Everything to be head and shoulders above the others I have tried in

Robin,
To my knowledge Best Buy does not carry the USR Courier V.Everything
modem. If you are in a position to purchase modems for your workplace
and were to consider a USR Sporster from Best Buy you should be stripped
of your authority to do so. Buying a budget peripheral from a mass
merchandiser for an enterprise installation is simply irresponsible and
borders on imcompetence. If your CFO/MIS mgr sees a value in the budget
purchase, he should be escorted out the front the door. Inappropriate
application of any hardware at the enterprise level is cause for
disciplinary action.
USR and most all companies design and develop products aimed at
different market segments and at various price points. In the ideal
world everybody would drive Mercedes, eat caviar and tell time on their
Rolex. However, everybody has their financial limits and manufacturers
of products adjust to those limits.
I have been visiting various hardware newsgroups for about a year. It
is really amazing to me, and a study in human nature, that the less
people spend on a product the more they will complain about the limits
of that product's performance. The whining about the Sportsters and
Winmodems is truly funny.
So. Do not nickel and dime your purchases. Buy the best you can afford
and then understand the limitiations of that purchase.
Paul Sloane
-these people are complaining that the products they bought dont
function as advertised and that usr cheated them out of promised promo
items (cash and upgrades) -then you say they got what they deserved and
they should be fired for believing what they were told -they will learn
from their mistake (buy _anything_ from usr) so they will go from being
ignorant to informed but you will stay an idiot

Didn't do the upgrade...bought a native 56k external. But it works--I'm
getting consistent 46.6 connects (got a 48 connect on a POP that wasn't a
local call).

I also have a USR sportster Flash 33.6/56k but in the UK, after speaking
to the sales people regarding the flash upgrade they toldd me that the
upgrade wasn't available in the market till the end of this month
(April) soI suppose its worth the wait, but I am wondering after all
since my ISP only supports upto 33.600 is it worth the effort.

Dont get the upgrade if your ISP does not support X2. This is currently
the first build of the new firmware. After I installed it on my V.
Everything I did not connect at the faster rates as often when
connecting to other 33.6 modems. The new software works fine, its just
a little more "picky". But, if you have a provider that supports X2,
get the upgrade, its a noticable increase.

Keep your cool, and go back to USR. There was an official post a while
back in which USR admitted that the approval process was flawed and
that they would re-visit that process to ensure no valid request was
denied improperly..

I bought a Courier V.34 off the Internet in an Amiga
newsgroup. Went to a US Robotics web site and got drivers
that updated it to Courier V. Everything Plug and Play.
Filled out request for free X2 upgrade and received e-mail
from US Robotics with instructions and key to upgrade.
Followed directions and things seem faster. How can I tell
if at X2? Using I.E. 3.02/ Mail and News.

USRobotics is a joke. I bought a 33.6 Sporster Voice modem with free
upgrade to 56k X2 all over it. Boy was I excited. I got it home and opened
it and found out I had to mail in a form and I would be notified. Well 3
months later I finally recieved a letter.
Not an upgrade but al etter. It says we are holding your upgrade. Please
call this number with your visa or mastercard ready and the following
serial number off your modem it then listed a 8 digit number.
O.K it's worth it for 7.00 bucks so I call. AND call AND call. For two days
it's busy.
So today I finnaly get through at work and I give them the 8 digit number.
She tells me that's the model number and I need the serial number off the
box. I told them I had already mailed in the serial number 3 months ago and
I was at work. I explained to her that the 8 digit number was giving to me
by them. She rudely RUDELY tells me that their was a slight mistake on the
letters mailed out and they accidently put the model instead of serial
number on them. I was pissed.I told her to pull up my serial number and
send me my upgrade. She then tells me that the serial numbers are kept in a
database in another city. She then tells me I could talk to a supervisor.
I say goo. Then I'm on hold for 35 minutes waiting. I had to hangup to go
back to work and never got a supervisor. So I come home get my box (luckily
I kept it) and I call for another 2 hours over and over. I finally get
through and pay my 7 bucks and find out I should recieve it it 6 weeks!!!
Thanks for nothing USR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My next modem will be anything but a USR. Never again

First of all when I see the word UPGRADE anywhere on a box I would
immediately draw the conclusion that some form of paperwork is involved
unless the word INCLUDED appears on the box. Secondly, it sounds like
quite a bit of time elapsed durring the course of your story. It was
common knowlege that the modems on the store shelves were not X2 capable
off the shelf. Even if you did not know that, you could have picked up
a computer magazine and read any of the dozens of articles in each issue
related to X2. Ill admit USR has a poor tech support/public relations
right now. But I dont hold it against them due to the merger, the wave
of modem purchases, and the introduction of X2. I know for a fact that
there support was excelent last year and the year before and I have no
doubt that it will return to the level it was once at. Even still, your
sportster is heads and shoulders above any other "computer superstor"
brand modem. How many of the other brands have a firmware uprgade.
Most of them are hardware upgrades if they have any at all. But if you
were realy concerned about features you would have picked up a Courier.

In an effort to balance things out, I've been VERY happy with every
USR purchase!!!

Sure. I had a problem with a brand new 33.6 Voice, and wrote to USR
about it. I received a two page message giving me codes. Use this code
for this problem, use this other code for this product. I finally got
the right information to the right person, and was given a SHR# or was
it a SHO#. I spend $13.50 sending them the bad modem, and was surprised
to get the replacement modem in 2 days. I unwrapped the package and
instead of a 33.6 voice modem the case says 14.4 VI modem. I plug it in
and check it out just to be sure, and find they gave me the right modem
with the wrong case. I e-mail them and a week later get a message they
are working on a new case. I reply and get back another two page
message with codes. That was three weeks ago, and still nothing.
I've registered my first modem which was good for the X/2 upgrade, but
haven't received that either. I'm wondering just what I'm going to have
to go through with the new modem, and serial number?

The modem might work well but you don't surf the net with the people
do you ?
After I complained that US Robotics didn't answer my email about not
having the bar code for the rebate, they gave me the rebate, anyways,
after I called their 800 number and explained. Beth

FYI- they are actually shipping chips for X2. I got my free/$7 upgrade
chip just a few days after FINALLY getting thru on their
AWFUL-ALWAYS-BUSY-SIGNAL 888#, and have installed it. I registered for
the free upgrade months ago and they finally sent a letter which
prompted me to persist and finally got thru in the evening. Of course,
now Device Mgr says its installed and no conflicts but my apps can't see
it and hang. arggghh.

Glad to hear it Rick. I bought my Sportster AFTER they started
plastering the 56K stickers on the box. I don't get the "free"
upgrade. I seems that you only qualify if you fell for thier
advertising and bought the modem 1 1/2 months AFTER they started
putting the stickers on the boxes in the store. I specifically bought
it at that time because I figured that if they were announcing the
upgrade (all the coupons, etc were there), then I'd qualify for it.
Nope - they want $60.

I bought it at Circiut City. The sales guy said the USR sales rep
came into all the stores in the Atlanta metro area and plastered those
stickers on the boxes. This was well ahead of the "eligibility"
period threshold for the "free" upgrade.
When dealing with a chain like that, I'm not sure they would solve
anything. And, judging from what people seem to be saying about USRX,
you won't get far there either.

Does anyone know of this fix?
Had to send my internal sporter in for the upgrade
(after they sent me the card) cause it turns out the
upgrade sockets are junk. The bastards kept my modem
for 80 days. Return phone calls never came even after
telling them that my lawyer was now involved.
The rude bitch I talked to made me feel like I was
a sucker for calling. Hope you bastards are listening
cause you missed out on the sale of 2000+ network cards
and 300 modems :P
Buy Rockwell save hundreds on asprin
I do not know if I would go as far as you in down playing US Robotics,
but I too have had difficulty contacting the company when it comes to
tech support.
Why is it that when you want to buy the product there is always a
happy smiling sales person? When you want to complain about the
product or get required tech support, one, you are put on hold for at
least 15 to 20 minutes, and, two, you are usually made to feel that
you are a fool for calling because the fault is you and your software
not the inferior product they sold you in the first place?
This not only stands true for US Robotics, it is also true for MOST of
the major software and hardware manufacturers.

Now imagine a 700 line (and growing) email looking like this. If you were
in technical support, could you follow the above, repeated many times over?
I couldn't. I'm going to take this issue up with 3Com management in CA.

I agree with your comments about USR EMail tech support. However, their
phone support is much better and I suggest you try that approach to
resolve your problem.

1. Not upgradeable (bullshit)
2. Would be expedited (2x)
3. "We're not expediting orders anymore" (3x)
4. "You'll get a whole new modem"
5. "You'll get a chip replacement"
6. "You'll get a new modem"
7. "You'll get a chip replacement"
8. "Dell OEM? We don't support them"
...and on and on.
I asked to speak with customer service about a billing issue and was
transferred 3x to tech support before being cut off. The first tech
support person, after asking who transferred the call to them,
commented, and I quote, "The X2 department sent you here?...boy are
they stupid".
USR is the worst company that I have ever dealt with. I finally
contacted Jim Ryan, the Attorney General for Illinois (312/814-3810)
and filed a formal complaint.
