The insw is instruction that reads the input word from port.
What does the BYTE stand for?

ins = Input String from port
w = Word
insw = Input String a Word at a time (I think)

to get a Byte at a time use
insb

I know this doesn't answer your question because I
don't know what I'm answering...

probably it is that assembler's version of DB. That is probably some
kind of exchange instruction...

65h is the gs segment override.

In NASM I would write:

insw
gs insw

This will force the insw instruction to use gs:di instead of es:di.

indeed specify the GS: segment overridehere, in this case it is invalid. In
general string instructions can nothave their destination segment ES:
overriden.L
