Actually, both the postmodernists and the soc-eo-logoical types both
spend
a lot of time on that idea -- that because you're writing, you project a
character
you formulate, rather than a simple person-to-person response.
I think it's a revival of the past -- ironic, but appropriately
paradoxical -- that
when you communicate by writing, it's a different thing than talkies.
For sure,
it means you get to look at what you said, every now & then.
And you're right, it means you get to be more emotional, rather than
controlled --
the person you're plonking on is, after all, on the other side of the
glass.
