My friend Peter Rashkin publishes an ezine:

He sent a note to his mailing list folks saying he had tapes
of an inspiring demo, and some new streaming video he just started
to use, so I asked him if he wanted stuff about audio on the net.
Here's a quick look:

here's a few, more to come (no 30!)

The PC Week article is a good summary about live audio. Here's
some more detailed stuff about RealAudio:

Here's some stuff about emailing audio files and audio file formats
(the FAQ and standards body ones look likely):

This is a great dictionary on the whole subject:

Canada, I love it!

Here's some stuff about file formats suitable for email:
href:http://search.go2net.com/crawler?general=%28.wav+OR++.au%29+email&method=2&target=&region=0&rpp=20&timeout=5&hpe=10

I'm mailing this to myself 'cause I'm going to forward it
to some other folks & some newsgroups.

SUMMARY: it looks like soundcards and associated software can convert
audio taped or live material into computer files of various formats:
..wav, .au, and others. There is also live (streaming) audio, from
three different companies: Progressive Network's RealAudio, Vocal Tec's
I-Wave, Xing Tech's Stream Works. RealAudio seems to be making deals
with MicroSoft, thereby becoming an (at-least temporary) standard.

I haven't checked, but it's probably possible to use the soundcard
to convert in both directions -- tape (or CD) to disk, disk to tape
or CD. Since I remember some folks causing trouble years ago by
sending a whole Monty Python CD to newsgroups, I know that conversion
and transmission of CD's is possible (but bulky). I'm sure it's
possible to go tape->net->tape (especially for digital tapes,
but almost certainly for standard analogue as well). Since details
are going to depend on what soundcard you've got in your 'puter,
tell me that & I'll look that up.
