* IBM COMES OUT WITH FREE W2K MIGRATION REDBOOK
In September/October '99 a new IBM redbook was produced called:
"Migrating Netfinity Servers to Windows 2000". It was a 2 month
hands-on experience in migrating various NT 4.0 domain structures
to Windows 2000 they documented. Even though they were working on
IBM Netfinity Servers, probably 95% of the results can be considered,
in this particular redbook, to be hardware-platform independent.
This book can be viewed/downloaded for free at the following web
site: www.redbooks.ibm.com (just search for "SG245854", w/o the
quotation marks, and.... it's yours).

* INSTALL W2K WITH JUST ONE FLOPPY? YUP.
3Com Corp announced it has licensed software to Microsoft that will
be included in every copy of Windows 2000. This technology will
make installing Windows 2000 as simple as inserting a single floppy
disk and turning the PC on. The software will also dramatically
lower the cost of upgrading and repairing PCs. The 'Remote OS Instal-
lation' technology will for sure enable easy deployment of Windows
2000 over a network. But What Is It?
The Windows 2000-based remote boot solution lets a PC boot itself
from a remote Windows 2000-based Remote OS Installation Server. To do
this, an end user or an administrator inserts a remote boot floppy
into the machine and turns the PC on. The software auto-detects the
PC's network interface card and invokes an industry standard remote
boot procedure.
This process culminates in the download and execution of a code
image to remotely install an operating system. The software works
with most network interface cards from 3Com, Hewlett-Packard, Intel,
SMC, AMD, Compaq and others. Pretty useful to say the least.

4. NT THIRD PARTY NEWS
* StorageCeNTral V4.1 UPGRADE DOES CAPACITY PLANNING
This upgraded Product Suite now gives you Capacity Planning, Web
Enabled Active Reporting, and supports SAN's.
StorageCeNTral 4.1 is the only storage management product that offers
real-time disk space consumption management on the market and enables
you to estimate future storage requirements. It includes Quota Advisor,
the only Second Generation quota tool, using advanced patent-pending
filter driver technology that is ahead of any other quota utility now
available. It is the only tool able to enforce disk space limits BEFORE
files are written and before the damage is done.
Najaf Husain, WQuinn president and CTO stated. †With these new
features, administrators will have additional capabilities that
automatically push file management to the users via an Intranet and
accurately plan for future storage requirements and deployment of
SAN and backup technologies.€
Active Reporting provides Web-based access to a collection of storage
management reports via an Intranet. Capacity planning enables you to
estimate future storage requirements by recording usage over time.
That allows you to accurately plan storage growth and deployment of
SAN and backup technologies.
Active Reports give your users the capability to manage their own
files and storage. You no longer have to manage user files, freeing
you up to work on more system critical issues. The StorageCeNTral
product components work together to proactively manage, control, and
analyze disk usage. This new version is Windows 2000 ready, IBM
Cluster proven, and of course runs on Microsoft Clusters.
DiskAdvisor 4.1 is a comprehensive disk reporting tools for Windows
NT/2000. The product contains 35 predefined storage management
reports that deal with issues of usage, security, performance and
management.
To be released in the first quarter of 2000, StorageCeNTral 4.1
DiskAdvisor 4.1 and QuotaAdvisor 4.1 will be available from WQuinn
or through its network of resellers. StorageCeNTral 4.1 starts at $995
per server for a single license. DiskAdvisor 4.1 starts at $395 per
server and QuotaAdvisor 4.1 starts at $795 per server.

* LOW COST SERVER CONSOLIDATION WITH SECURE COPY V2.0
Small Wonders Software announces the immediate availability of
Secure Copy, version 2.0. Secure Copyˆs seamless migration allows
you to copy files and directories on NTFS partitions while keeping
the security intact, creating shares and migrating local groups
and users; options that are not available using native Windows NT
copying tools.
New features include differential copying which only copies files
that have been changed in the source server, the ability to save
multiple jobs and then schedule those jobs to run after-hours, and
a new easy-to-use GUI interface. Secure Copy also allows you to
migrate existing shares and local groups from the source server to
the destination server while keeping permissions intact.
"NT Administrators need to transfer data from one server to another
when upgrading, repartitioning, and or retiring servers, as well
as during Windows 2000 deployment. Without Secure Copy, transferring
data from one server to another is costly and time-consuming" stated
Brian Small, President of Small Wonders Software.

5. HINTS AND TIPS
Sun is claiming they are the 'dot' in dot.com. Microsoft decided
to find out if that is the truth and created an amusing webpage:
