NEWS BRIEFS

Bjarni Tryggvason on Shuttle Flight STS-85

The main news of the week concerns Shuttle flight STS-85, set
for launch at 10:41am EST August 7th. Bjarni Tryggvason will fly as
Payload Specialist on this space science mission. More
details can be found on CSA's STS-85 web site at:

http://www.astro.space.gc.ca/sts85/

which will be updated throughout the mission.

The orbit is of high inclination (57 degrees) so viewing
opportunities in Canada may exist. Landing is scheduled for
August 18, 1997. 7:29am. Under similar re-entry conditions
the Shuttle's (rather spectacular) plasma trail has been
viewed over the West Coast, e.g. Vancouver (or Kitimat where
Tryggvason is originally from).

Check:

http://ssl.berkeley.edu/isi_www/satpasses.html#sts

for your city's viewing opportunities.

Hadfield Second Flight Assignment

NASA has assigned Mission Specialist Chris Hadfield, to a
flight which will involve him as the first Canadian to
'spacewalk'. The mission STS-99 is set for launch in June
1999. Hadfield will take part in attaching the space station
remote manipulator system to the Space Station.

Space Science Update

VSOP
The VSOP program is turning out to be a huge success after
the February launch of the Japanese Halca spacecraft. The
Canadian VSOP science team is releasing its first official
image tomorrow morning. Check
http://www.science.sp-agency.ca/pub/imagelibrary.html
for the image.

MIM
STS-85 will carry the Microgravity Isolation Mount (MIM),
which was developed by Payload Specialist Bjarni
Tryggvason, and on it a fluid-physics experiment called
FLEX that will measure the capabilities of the MIM
instrument.

CAPE
The CAPE protein crystallization experiments will finally
make their way to the Mir space station on the Sept. 18
shuttle flight. Among the samples will be several dozen
from Canadian students who competed last year for the
opportunity.

MOPITT
MOPITT, Canada's first major pollution probe in space, will
be delivered to NASA in mid-August. The instrument will
make global measurements of carbon monoxide and methane in
the atmosphere over the next five years, beginning shortly
after its launch in June 1998.

CAL Corp. News

CAL Corporation, has won a contract to supply its new CALTRAC
Star Tracker to Aerospatiale of Toulouse, France for the
inaugural flight of the new multi-mission PROTEUS bus.
Having supplied numerous optical sensors for multiple space
science missions over the past 15 years, CAL has focused its
optical technology into a compact, high-speed star tracker
which combines unique attitude recovery capabilities with
traditional star sensor accuracy.

Charged Hearts - National Gallery of Canada

Ottawa, July.14.97 - Well, it's not exactly related to space,
but readers may be interested in a new media sculpture at
the National Gallery of Canada here in Ottawa. The exhibit,
called Charged Hearts, incorporates both an animation of
Solar disk images taken from the SOHO spacecraft, and a
Terrella. The Terella is a reconstruction of a device which
Kristian Birkeland used in the early 1900's to simulate the
Earth's Aurora. More details at www.charged-hearts.net. The
exhibit is on display in Ottawa until mid-September.
