Jack Ellis has asked me to post the following --
The 15-Jan-2008 UIDE on <www.mdgx.com> has a SERIOUS error: Disk I-O
does NOT zero the lower DMA byte-count after "raw" (audio/trackwriter)
CD input. I have also been DISMAYED by drivers like GCDROM/XGCDROM/
XDMA32/XCDROM32, that either do not work well or that require JEMM386.
Many of us prefer and use UMBPCI. And as current PC systems now must
have 1/2/4-GB of memory to support [HORRID!] Gates & Co. "Vista", what
are DOS users going to DO with all that memory except "put it to WORK"
as a large disk/CD/DVD cache??
To resolve all of this, I have decided to release XMGR [unchanged] and
UIDE to all users again.
Khusraw and I are done testing, and Johnson and Lucho are testing, the
latest UIDE of 25-Apr-2009. It caches up to 2-GB of data and it uses
1056 bytes of upper-memory and 3776 of HMA memory for ANY cache size!!
UIDE's variable search tables now use XMS. With ROM-DOS [no HMA] and
FreeDOS [no HMA when drivers load], UIDE uses 4832 upper-memory bytes,
still "not too shabby" for a SATA and IDE driver with 2-GB caching for
disks/diskettes/CDs/DVDs! UIDE's stand-alone /B option now uses 1056
upper-memory and 2800 HMA bytes, 3856 on ROM-DOS or FreeDOS, for users
who want a small non-caching driver. I still intend to add ADMA/AHCI
controller support, if mainboards ever require it.
XMGR/UIDE's licensing and FreeDOS restrictions are gone, and they will
again be offered with their sources [V5.1 MASM format]. Johnson Lam
will again post the 4-25-2009 XMGR/UIDE at his <johnson.tmfc.net> site
when he can [busy at work!]. Users who want the drivers immediately,
as "beta" drivers until Johnson and Lucho are done with their testing,
may E-Mail me: <mezuk...@sprynet.com>
