I am doing a project about the fall of Communism, specifically in East
Germany, and need to compare the fall of the totalitarian regime to past
historical examples. Does anyone know of any others offhand? For
instance, was there a Roman leader way back in history that took over
the country and was later toppled by its own people? Or in China?
Elsewhere in Europe? This is the type of thing I'm looking for. If
anyone can point me in a direction it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Its a problem using examples from the ancient
world- while a lot of Roman emperors were
overthrown (especially in the 3rd century AD) it
wasnt the political philosophy that was
overthrown- rather, it was the individual emperor.
Ancient Republican examples arent asll that good
either- often the overthrow was merely the
replacement of an oligarchy with a monarchy, which
really isnt all that much of a change

Something that might be useful- the fall of the
Ottoman empire after WW1 replaced a theocracy/
autocracy with a relatively democratic/secular
form of government. Also- how about attempts to
establish Utopian regimes and the failure of
these. After all-communism was supposed to
establish a utopian regime for the common man

Have fun!
