Short Story and Poetry Contest -- Over $12,000 in Prizes

The National Archives of Short Stories & Poetry is sponsoring three
different contests -- a poetry and two short story contests. Amateur
authors and poets are encouraged to submit their original work to win
valuable priNational Archives of Short Stories and Poetry, located near
famous author John Steinbeckšs home town, has just announced that over
$12,000 in prizes will be awarded over the next twelve months to short
story and poetry authors. The deadline for the contest is May 31, 1999.
The next contest begins June 1, 1999. The contest is open to all adults,
18 years of age and older, and entry is free. The contest is open to U.S.
residents only.

"We are very excited to open this contest to amateur authors and poets,
and look forward to submissions from people who want to be published,"
said Lira Cafe', Selection Chairperson for The National Archives. "Copies
of works published will be sent to the United States Copyright Office and
the Library of Congress. Authors will retain the copyright of their
stories and poems."

It's Easy To Enter

Anyone over 18 may enter by submitting their work into one of three
categories: Short Story 1 (500 words or less) Short Story 2 (501-1000
words) and Poetry (no more than 30 lines). Stories can be on any topic,
and poetry submissions may be of any style. Only one submission per
category is permitted. The title of the work, as well as the author's full
name and address must appear on the top of each submitted work and sent by
mail to:

"The selection committee meets monthly to respond to the authors
who submit their work. Many stories and poems will also be considered for
publication in either The National Archives softbound or hardbound
anthologies," explained Ms. Cafe'. "These anthologies will be submitted to
the Library of Congress and are available to publishing houses who scout
out new talent."

"I'm very happy to report that a children's short story and poetry contest
is also being launched for children between the ages of 8 and 17. There is
no obligation or fee to enter, and you or your child may be the next big
winner," indicated Ms. Cafe'.

Parents should submit their child's story or poem to the address above.
Parents should include their name and address, as well as their child's
name and age. All poems and stories submitted must include a title.
