I need to identify Compaq computers via software, I'm looking for a little
DOS program that can return the exact type-model of the machine, or an ID
that can give me these info.
The Compaq RomPaqs seems to do this kinf of job, they don't want to install
in an unsuitable computer, but how ?
Reading a value in the eeprom ?

I can't find help on the Compaq web site, and don't know where to search,
thanks for your help..

P.S. sorry for my poor english, I'm french..

Thanks for your answer, but I need a DOS program, not a web-based tool !

And that program doesn't give that information for all Compaqs, as we
have recently learned here...there may be no such program--in fact, I
suspect that there is no such program not just for Compaqs but PCs in
general. It appears that only the newer PCs of some manufacturers
have loaded on them identity info that can be read by some of these
diagnostic programs. Generally, Compaq model numbers are easily found
on the front of the case or else where on or in the case.

What info are you looking for that you can't get from case inspection
and boot up and Setup display?

Perhaps his system is like mine, the part of the logo with model number was
ripped from the front of my desktop case. It's very sad that Compaq doesn't
put the model info on the inside of the case cover or on the bottom.

Karateka (I found out that I have Presario 7170)

PS: Describe the system here with processor, layout, controller chips, video
etc.
I did that and got the info from people here.
