The only way to test the connector on the far end is to have a receive "launch" cable or to test bi-directional.

The need for a receive cable makes sense, in the same way that using a
launch cable makes sense.  The logistics of getting the receive cable at the
end point are complex (this is an inter-city singlemode shot, so I was
trying to avoid it).  Thanks, though.
