We just announced over on the Official Google Blog that we'll be deploying a trial 1 Gbps Fiber to the Home network to 850 homes and condos on the Stanford Faculty Housing subdivision. This is our 'Beta' trial and to be clear  its completely separate from our community selection process for Google Fiber, which is still ongoing.

Still even though our 'Beta' trial is small in scale, we are looking forward to creating one of the first 'Villages of the Future' which will serve as a template for Universal Gigabit access and Fiber for Communities.

Stay tuned for more details

Cheers

Thanks for posting an update, James! The beta test sounds like a great
opportunity for Google's engineers to learn and draw some initial
conclusions. I hope your team will be posting some of their findings
here in the Google Group.

Of course, I'm also happy to hear that Google's still planning to
announce the selected communities before the end of the year. I know
everyone on the Think Big Topeka team has folks (and media outlets)
asking them for updates on a regular basis. It will be nice to be able
to provide some fresh info.

Regards,
Alissa Sheley

James -

That's great news to me! Now I know where to look for a place to rent/couch surf when (if?) I'm accepted into Y Combinator's upcoming batch of startups.

What are the chances that the network will be functional in, say, 12 or more homes by February? March?

Perfect timing. I am presenting at Ignite Anchorage 4 tonight on the
Anchorage response to Google's Fiber for Communities project, and it
is nice to have a little news to perk everyone up.

We are looking forward to learning details about both fiber deployment
and Internet service provisioning at the Stanford beta.

thanks for the update,
Lance

This is very exciting! Those of us in Blacksburg Virginia are hoping
that Google will choose another university town that has proven it is
"open to experimentation" for their selected community for the fiber
implementation. Blacksburg became known for its partnership with
Virginia Tech to launch an experiment in Internet access for citizens
back in the early 90's for our Blacksburg Electronic Village. The
first town in the world to have Internet access for all.

Please keep Blacksburg, VA on your list of contenders for fiber to the
home. We're ready!

We are pleased to be partnering with Sonic.net to support the Beta deployment, Sonic.net will manage operation of the Fiber to the Home network, provide customer service and support and perform on-site installation and repair for the deployment at the Faculty Housing subdivision.
