to Fiber For Communities
As a current fiber to the home customer (through another ISP) I have
been impressed with the technologies ability to deliver fast and
reliable internet service. It will be interesting what infrastructure
Google provides the end user with and what portion of end users will
be able to take advantage of the full 1Gbps connection. The basic
router in most homes would be a severe choking point even if it's
wired to the computer with an internal 1Gbps switch. Will Google
offer a customer router/switch solution sporting high power hardware
and running a linux distro like untangle/pfsense/smoothwall/m0n0wall?
Even then will the user have hopes of hitting 1Gbps? I know my
untangle box has a choke point using a 1Gbps dual port PCI connect as
the PCI is limited to 800mbps ish.
