How To Apply To Tulane Honors Program

Opportunities are available for First-Year Honors Scholars to explore their majors, research interests, career paths, and academic opportunities on campus. Scholars will engage with faculty, researchers, and fellow student scholars as mentors. None of the programming options are required. Instead, we encourage our Honors Scholars to self-select into the honors opportunities that are most important to them. Opportunities for engagement are listed below.
Entry as an Honors Scholar is determined by admission; there is no application process. Students receive notification about their status as an Honors Scholar with their admission letter. Any questions about honors admission decisions can be directed to your admission counselor.
Our application typically opens at the start of the spring semester, and all first-year students with a 3.4 GPA or above are eligible to apply. Visit the College Scholars website for more information about the College Scholars program.
The Newcomb Scholars Program is a cohort program focused on scholarship and research, leadership, and community engagement, no matter the field of study. Newcomb Scholars take several courses as a 20-member cohort and complete theses to present during the annual Newcomb Scholars Symposium. Students apply for Newcomb Scholars in the fall of their freshman year.

Students applying to College Scholars have the option to apply additionally for the College Scholars Leadership Council. Students can apply to remain on the council for junior and senior year. Participation allows for unique leadership opportunities, including but not limited to developing a faculty and alumni speaker program, coordinating programs (i.e. an upperclass reunion panel/activity), mentoring incoming members, shaping programs and signature events. While there is a minimum time commitment, levels of participation may flexibly vary to accommodate schedules and other commitments. Students from each class year are represented in this council.
First-year undergraduates who are full-time students in Newcomb-Tulane Undergraduate College are eligible to apply to the Newcomb Scholars program during their first fall semester at Tulane University.
Typical scholarship recipients rank in the top 5 percent of the class, have a rigorous academic program with honors and advanced placement courses, and have an outstanding record of extracurricular activities and score near the top of the range in a college admission test.
Tulane SPHTM welcomed its first Coverdell Fellows in the fall semester of 2017. The Coverdell Fellows program is an opportunity for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) to pursue graduate studies with specific benefits such as financial assistance. A: It is recommended that students applying to the Altman Program should have earned 9-12 Advanced Placement or equivalent credits, or 3-4 courses, before matriculating at Tulane. The Altman Program has a demanding curriculum, in which the student will need to meet the requirements of dual degrees plus all of the regular Tulane University requirements. It would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to complete the program in four years without incoming credits.
Applications will be reviewed by the Creative Premedical Scholar Program Nominating Committee and top-ranked students will be invited to interview with the committee at the end of April. The Committee will notify applicants regarding their decision by mid-June. Creative Premedical Scholars are expected to carry at least 15 credits per semester and maintain a 3.6 GPA. They must also write an honors thesis (Scholars not in the Honors program will write a thesis in their major department).
TPM is an invitation-only program. Select high-achieving students will be invited to apply for TPM after they apply for undergraduate admission. Students selected to apply typically have an ACT score of 35+ and a high school GPA of 3.8+. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will invite candidates to interview on campus during Honors Weekend. Soon after the interview process, the applicants will be notified if they are accepted in the program.

The FLAS fellowship program provides academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related area/international studies. The goal of the program is to get students to advanced proficiency levels in a less commonly taught language in order to provide a cadre of language and area studies experts to government agencies, the private sector, and academia. FLAS fellowships support students whose studies focus upon various world and thematic areas, including: Africa, Eastern Europe/Russia/Eurasia, Latin America, Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Western Europe, and Silk Road studies. Eligible students apply for fellowships directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship recognizes outstanding students studying in NOAA mission fields. (Mission fields include, but are not limited to, oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education that support NOAA's programs and mission.) Student scholars receive up to $9,500 per academic year to support their studies, as well as paid summer internship opportunities at NOAA facilities across the US. Students can apply during the second year of a four-year academic program. Applications are due in late January.
Once you're here, you'll have access to special campus housing for honors students as well as all the amenities the University of South Carolina has to offer. No doubt you are accustomed to challenging course work and strong academics, but there's a great big world beyond the classroom and Honors College students are encouraged, make that required, to apply what they learn through research projects, study abroad, service learning and internships. As you navigate that big world, you'll also be part of a supportive community, including other honors students and a devoted team of faculty and staff.
To create the list, we looked for popular and/or highly ranked research institutions across the nation and identified those offering honors programs for incoming freshmen. Both public and private universities were considered. We then compiled admissions profiles and determined which institutions require a separate application for honors program admission.
On September 25, 2020, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a proposed regulation that would establish fixed end dates on student and exchange visitor visas, and many other changes. Currently, international students and scholars may stay in the United States for the duration of their program, with some PhD programs having a standard length of 7 years. Under this proposal, individuals applying to either F or J status would be limited to a 4 year stay.
If individuals were to need additional time to complete their program, including requests for legal work authorization after graduation, or would like to start a new degree or academic program, they would have to pay a fee and apply for an extension of stay to the USCIS and the application could be accepted or rejected. This proposed rule creates an unwelcoming and uncertain environment for international students and scholars.
The most impressive incoming undergraduate students are invited to join the honors program by the Office of Admission. Incoming freshmen who did not receive an invitation are allowed to apply for one after completing their first semester with at least a 3.8 cumulative GPA. To remain in good standing with the honors program, honors students are required to maintain at least a 3.8 cumulative GPA and enroll in honors classes their first year in the program. Honors students have access to special privileges and learning opportunities on campus.[98]
The Dean's Honor Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded by Tulane which covers full tuition for the duration of the recipient's undergraduate program. The scholarship is offered to between 75 and 100 incoming freshmen by the Office of Undergraduate Admission and is awarded only through a separate application. This scholarship is renewable provided that the recipient maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA at the end of each semester and maintains continuous enrollment in a full-time undergraduate division. Typically, recipients have SAT I score of 1450 or higher or an ACT composite score of 33 or higher, rank in the top 5% of their high school graduating class, have a rigorous course load including honors and Advanced Placement classes, and an outstanding record of extracurricular activities.[99] Notable recipients include Sean M. Berkowitz and David Filo.
Roadmap Scholars - applicant should hold an MD, PhD, DDS or PharmD and should be a junior faculty in one of the three institutions: Pennington Biomedical, LSU Health New Orleans, and Tulane University. Scholars from other institutions are welcome to apply to the Master of Science in Clinical Research program at Tulane University.
