Hey, everyone!! I hope you're all having a great break, but remember
our first NHD deadline is quickly approaching! To start, I'd
recommend doing some reading on the Internet about your topic (general
background stuff). You can find some amazing stuff on Google Books,
including digitized versions of full books for free! After getting
close to deciding what topic you want, head down to a library! I
strongly recommend the Boulder Public Library if you can get there...
They have a ton of books and some really helpful resources. Browse
around, and you'll be amazed at some of the stuff you'll find! :D
Good luck everyone, and have a great break! Remember Mrs. Campbell-
Hale said she wanted us to do around 3 hours of research over break.
I think it's better to do more than that, but please do at least that
much to make her (and you, later on) happy!

good reminder...what is the deadline you're talking about?
Oh, and for anyone who wants to do a research log, remember that it's basically writing down everything you look for, where you look for it, and what you find, as well as the time at which all that happens. So don't forget to start it on the spot, as you do the research, or else it will be tricky to get full credit for it.
Or you can do the 400 note cards the night before all the research is due...which isn't as bad as it sounds.

Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

I was just talking about how the school competition is Valentine's Day, and we have several deadlines before then.  I don't have my planner with me (it's at school), but we have to periodically show her notecards to prevent people from doing them all the night before (!).

oh...you're kidding!!
well, how the heck do I survive??
ah well, I suppose I'll have to do the work this time. On the bright side my nerves won't collapse by the time I finish the project.
thanks for the heads up.

Well, there are pros and cons to the notecards and the research journal, for example, notecards take a lot of extra time to write on one, go to the next, etc. and they get lost/disorganized easily. The good thing is that most, if not all, of us are familiar with them. The research log wouldn't get lost so easily, but we also have no experience with it... I think it's worth a shot at if you don't really like notecards.

Pretty much. Me, I've never been an organized person. Well...I can be, but only if I'm really bored and with LOTS of extra energy, which is very rare. I hate notecards with a passion since they don't help me at all (I study from lists, if anything). But I know lots of people that couldn't live without them...my guess is they'll probably go for that option. And I'm sure they're fast at making them too. freaks. JUST KIDDING! haha...
I have no idea how well the journal works though - I've never had to make one!

Well, I'd recommend going with notecards because then you can know exactly when you have 400 cards.  Also, LCH said she's never given a perfect score to someone who didn't do notecards.  Also, remember to write in pen!!  :o

Hey, I hope everyone is having a good break.

I've found a nice way to take notes for history day that's a lot like
the notecard way but each note gets automatically dated and you can
sort and search through your notes digitally. If you don't like
technology, then I would advise to stick to good-ole paper, but
otherwise you can check out Google Notebook (www.google.com/notebook).
It's pretty reliable and fast, and you need a Google account (gmail
counts) but otherwise I think it's fantastic.

Good luck! and most importantly, RELAX!!!!! (cough Colin)

That's awesome, but it's part of the google toolbar, right? I feel like I'm getting a bunch of stuff I don't need just for this one good option.

You don't need the Google toolbar to access google notebook. There is
a specialized plugin for the notebook here (http://www.google.com/
notebook/download/) and you can also just visit www.google.com/notebook/
to get the web application.

I hope that helps. Everything will work as long as you have either
Internet Explorer or Firefox (definitely with Firefox) as your
browser.

Sorry, that link should be (http://www.google.com/notebook/download/)
for the browser extension.

I have a quick question about what Campbell-Hale said on Monday to second period, which could be a problem. She said something about two hours of research over break... was that min or max? Sorry for asking, but I just remembered, and it would be of great help to get opinions from everyone.

If anyone has a relative or sibling or a friend who is either a
student at C.U. or is a Faculty there, you could ask them to take you
to CU's Norlin Library to borrow books with their BuffOneCard. It has
a lot more books than the Boulder Public Library. For Faculties, up to
300 books could be borrowed for 6 months (and they could be renewed
for even longer!!). For Students I think up to 100 or so books could
be borrowed for 3 months.

Here's the website to look up books/articles/ etc. that are available
in CU:
http://libraries.colorado.edu/

Oh and before you visit the library, make sure that you know where
your books are (which section and floor) because that library is huge
and confusing. Norlin Stacks, where most of the books are located, is
on the top floor of the building but it has 3 more floors of its own.
Also, try to get to the library as soon as possible because the start
of the semester for CU students would make the library really busy and
books are more likely to be checked out, for a long time too!
