Hi Everyone -
Thanks to those who joined us on Zoom last week. We covered a lot of issues in a short time and here's a quick look in writing. We all agreed it’s been a good summer – great weather, we dodged a hurricane, and had some fun
events. The BBQ, the kids' movies, Fitness at the Firehouse, Kids Art, the pop-up viewing of Jaws, Sing Along with King and Clear Your Clutter were all
successful and fun events.
Bay Walk Railing: FEMA built the bay walk railing after Hurricane Sandy but stopped halfway between Cranberry and Birch. We've been asking the TOI to continue it for years and they more or less recently signed off on it as not their responsibility. So we put your FHCA dues to work and had it built. Thanks to Billy and John and all involved. It was a dangerous drop off that is now protected. See attached photos.
Ferries: Boats are sometimes few and far between this time of year. If you'd like to join a special email group to share a water taxi (either from FIF or H20), please reply. We will forward the emails to you and your group can be in touch with each other.
Wagons and boats: Please take home your wagons from the area at the bay and the hanging wagon lot. They'll last longer when not exposed to six months of salt spray. This area needs to be clear for snow removal and other reasons. And please take home your kayaks, boards, catamarans and hobie cats from anywhere on the bay. Storms can move your boats on land where they block walks, and we can't ask others there to deal with that when you're gone.
Pioneer: You've probably heard Pioneer is for sale as Robbie and Lou want to retire. Call Nick Newman if you want to buy a small business here in Fair Harbor. Nick has also applied for a peddler's permit for a food truck across from Pioneer. He believes it will add value to the community and he can give you more info. The permit process will go through the TOI, and you can contact them with strong feelings either way.
Garbage: Regular Tuesday, Wed (recycling) and Friday pickup will continue through Oct. 31. Starting Nov 1 until Dec. 2, there is only Tuesday pickup. The last recycling pickup is Oct. 29. And please arrange with a neighbor to take your last bag of garbage. Don't bring it to the dock.
Playground: We're in the process of replacing the top to the spinner there. It is old and makes noise.
ECD Project: is still on track and the good news is that FINS, which has now recognized the importance of the bay, says we're far enough along not to need a special Environment Assessment. It's doubtful that anything will happen this year, but we'll keep going forward.
Pine Trees: For years, FI has been battling pine beetles that can kill a pine tree. If you have any dead pine trees, please arrange to have them taken down rather than waiting for them to fall down haphazardly. For more info on pine beetles, visit this FINS site or see the 2015 article from FIA and 2025 AI-generated info.
Lifeguards: The ocean lifeguards' union has requested a longer season for Fair Harbor. We support this and have sent a letter to the TOI stating such.
Driving on FI: This issue will arise again with a final round of comments, probably in Feb, and we'll need your voices then. Most island stakeholders are not happy with the current FINS proposal. The Fire Island Association (FIA) has hired legal counsel and can use your support. Join them at www.fireislandassociation.org. Their dues is $90/year and they work on many island-wide issues.
Members: We now have 242 out of 360 members. There's still time to join and we still need your money. www.fairharbor.org/dues
