FINS released a statement yesterday announcing that the National Park Service (NPS) has issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Fire Island ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) Management Environmental Assessment (EA). Here's a link (below) to the press release along with an attached pdf of the FONIS. Key elements for the new driving rules appear in a chart on pages 4-7.

Please know that the proposed new regulations will impact Fair Harbor more than other towns to our east just because of our location. We all need to know what's going on.

The Fire Island Association (FIA) is meeting today with a committee of island stakeholders to review the proposed regulations in detail and assess how they align with the needs of our island communities, residents, businesses and visitors. Based on their preliminary understanding, they expect to have significant concerns that need to be addressed. They have also engaged legal counsel.

Please note that this EA and notice are not the final agency action. The next step will be the publication of the "proposed rules" in the Federal Register, followed by an opportunity for additional public comment. The timing of the comment period has not yet been announced.

The FIA is very effective in managing island-wide issues such as this, along with repair of our dunes, wastewater management, and bayside erosion. The challenges facing our barrier island are mounting, and so are the costs of protecting it.
