Right after Christmas, several houses in FH were broken into, mostly on Fifth. The thieves took tools, electronics, and jewelry. Since then we have heard that other homes were affected (Cedar and Birch). We don't know if this was at the same time or an additional time. Police were notified both times and are checking all the houses today.

In addition, if you want to know about your own home, you should contact your contractor to check it. If you don't have a contractor, hit reply and we can send you some names and numbers. If you house was broken in to, please call Suffolk County Marine Bureau Police at  631-854-8382 to report it.

We have taken down posts about this on Facebook. Although our group is private, it now has 3,500 people "related" to FH. We don't want to give people the idea that our homes are left unlocked or unchecked in the winter or that this was more than an isolated incidence. We will communicate about this through our email list, which is about 1,000 people, mostly homeowners.

People have suggested several ways to protect our homes such as using cameras and locking all doors, windows, keys and front gates. There seems to be an opportunity for someone in Fair Harbor to offer a winter exterior home checking service for both weather damage and theft. If you are interested in providing that service, please reply so we can let people know you are available.

Stay safe, everyone, and see you soon.
