NOTES FROM 2025 SUMMER MEETING
The meeting on July 31 on Zoom began with good news: not much is new and things
are running smoothly so far.
Activities: Clear Your
Clutter, the Sing-Along, the Wednesday programs (Fitness at 11, Kids Art at
3:30, and Kids Movies at 6:30) are going well. Game time at 1:00 is slow out of
the gate but mahjong lessons brought in a few people. Thanks to the FHCA board and all who helped
with Clutter, and to Meredith Davis, Gemina Giannino and Gina Gold.
And, of course, to Cedric Legret for his help at the firehouse.
FHCA Memberships:
At this time, the number of members is down a little but a recent email
directed at getting people to donate brought in a few more memberships. There's still time to join. www.fairharbor.org/dues
Swans: The swans
have not been around. You may recall that the delivery of the order for our net was delayed
so we cancelled it. We got Suffolk County Water to turn off the overflow pipe
and we put up ropes. So far, so good. We have a great group of lifeguards at the
bay beach this summer. Thank you Gail Newell and her crew.
Sharks: We get
emails when sharks are sighted in Fair Harbor that we don’t forward because of
time delays. But the first notice for this year came on Wednesday, with another
on Thursday. So as a general notice, please know that sharks are real and
people really shouldn’t swim when lifeguards aren’t watching for marine life. Purple flags indicate the presence of marine life.
Hurricanes: The season
is coming. Everyone should have a plan and know what to do — i.e. have candles,
charge your phone, etc. FHFD would lead emergency operations in FH and the
ferries have always helped evacuate. But be prepared and don’t wait til the
last minute. If a storm is coming, please notify your renters or guests.
Peddlers: A
resolution is being proposed to the Town of Islip to include Fair Harbor as one
of the town’s hamlets that allows peddlers. Such a permit
could allow peddlers to set up shops here to sell food or goods. Like everything, granting such a permit would have both positive and negative effects. While we’re trying to
get more information, if you have strong feelings either way, you
should contact Councilman Mike McElwee by calling (631-224-5559) or writing
him at 655 Main St., Islip, NY 11751 and mmce...@islipny.gov. Petitions can also be submitted to the
Town Board at the same mailing address.
Updates: FINS
driving, erosion control, jetty removal — not much had changed since May
report. Thank you Patrick Daniels for putting up the second row of dune fencing.
Upcoming events:
BBQ 9/20, Rosh Hashanah 9/23, garbage
day 9/27
Sad News: FHCA will
only send out announcements of people passing when the family asks us to.
Garbage: People are
very happy that Brownie is barging recycling off on Wednesdays rather than
storing it in dumpsters near Oak for Friday removal. Please flatten your boxes.
Next Meeting: September TBA.
