Skip the Butcher: Farmers & Homesteaders Invited to Learn Poultry
Processing on the Farm
MILLHEIM, PA. September 20, 2012 Join the Pennsylvania Association for
Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), on Monday, October 8th at Lady Bug
Farm in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County for a Farm-Based Education
(FBE) hands-on Field Day on poultry processing, health and nutrition.
In this Field Day, “Hands-on Poultry Processing: Health, Nutrition &
Regulations”, participants will watch a processing demonstration with
Mike and Christie Badger of the American Pastured Poultry Producers
Assocation (APPPA). They will then practice processing birds
themselves using the Badgers' mobile processing unit (MPU), an open
trailer that contains all the equipment necessary to process poultry
from start to finish.
Jeff Mattocks of The Fertrell Company and Susan Beal, DVM will join us
to talk broiler (meat birds) management, including housing options,
pasturing, nutrition and animal health. Recently, the USDA Food Safety
Inspection Service (FSIS) has made attempts to more clearly define
what a producer needs to do to qualify for an exemption from
inspection. Brian Moyer of PSU Extension will lead a discussion to
help us understand the requirements and how to qualify for exemptions.
Participants will take home the recently updated Farmer’s Guide to
Processing and Selling Meat or Poultry.
“Poultry can be an interesting and nutrient cycle completing component
of the farm system providing fertility, income, food and insect
control,” states Tom Lisak of Lady Bug Farm. “On-farm processing need
not be a daunting task; the methods learned here can be tweaked for
each individual’s needs.”
This event is held in partnership with The Fertrell Company and funded
in part by the PA Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative. To learn more
