The MD Sheep Breeders is hosting a day long educational seminar that will occur during prior to our annual banquet. The event is at the Howard County Fairgrounds.

SPEAKER: Dr. Dan Morrical from Iowa State University is the invited speaker. His teaching specialties include instruction in production systems, management, resource evaluation and allocation, nutrition health, financial records, and low cost nutrition alternatives. His area of research is sheep nutrition, sheep health, fetal and lamb survival.

LUNCH: A special lunch of grilled lamb slider + sausage, tortellini soup with lamb sausage and more will be a culinary delight.

LODGING: Turf Valley in Ellicott City has a special rate for this event. Group Code 27V6X2. Room rate (plus tax) of $119 (traditional) or $149 (executive king). Contact Turf Valley directly to make reservations (410-465-1500, or 1-888-833-8873). SUPPLY SWAP: Bring 1-3 sheep or farm related items that you want to ‘swap’. For example, bring a sock pattern, skein of yarn, farm tool, sheep book – then use your ‘swap ticket’ to choose a ‘new-to-you’ item from the table.

9:10 – 10:00 Nutritional Importance of Minerals and Vitamins – Dan Morrical

10:00 – 11:20 Controlling Feed Costs – Dan Morrical

11:30 – 12:15 Ration balancing Software – Susan Schoenian

12:15 – 1:30 Lunch and vendor time

1:30 – 2:30 Feeding Ewes Better for Increased Production and Profit – Dan Morrical

2:30 – 3:00 Hands-on demo of Hay Analysis – Jeff Semler

Visually give Hay bales a score , then compare with the actual hay analysis. Compare

hay price to %TDN/protein. Explain when you would use that particular hay (dry ewe,

early gestation, lactation). Or would it be cheaper to buy a bagged feed/grain.

Discuss sheep health issues that are nutritional in nature (e.g. White muscle, Copper

toxicity, Acidosis, Ketosis)

panels. Home remedies (e.g. electrolytes) to use in an emergency.

4:20 – 4:30 Closing remarks. Adjourn.

6:00 MSBA Annual Banquet (Appetizers). Dinner to begin at 6:30 PM
