Subject: House Farm Bill Action - Part Two
To: Mark Schonbeck <ma...@abundantdawn.org>

Dear All,

Markup is happening NOW at the House Agriculture Committee.

Those of you in Bob Goodlatte's district, or those of you in the district of another House Ag Committe members:

For those of you with a social media presence - now's a great time to talk to House Ag Comm reps on Facebook or Twitter.
All others - use e-mail or phone.  See Carrie Meadows' e-address in my last e-mail.  Or call Goodlatte's office, 202-225-5431.

In addition to the issues raised in the last e-mail, note the following:

The draft Farm Bill presented to the Committee by Reps. Lucas and Peterson would impose a dollar-for-dollar match requirement on ALL USDA competitive research grant programs - including SARE as well as the new and larger Agrculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) and the Organic Research Extension Initiative (OREI). This would effectively shut individuals, farmer groups, and nonprofits out of these programs.  Ask Rep. Goodlatte and his aide Carrie Meadows to work actively to remove this provision from the 2012 Farm Bill.

Reps. Conaway and Costa have introduced an amendment #034, to Repeal GIPSA Livestock and Poultry Producer Rules developed by USDA as mandated under the 2008 Farm Bill.
Yes - this is the "farmers' bill of rights" Rule that has already been significantly weakened by budget machinations over the past couple of years; this Amendment would essentially demolish the rest.  Urge Goodlatte to vigorously and actively oppose this Amendment!

FYI - some of the key amendments mentioned in my last e-mail now have numbers to which you can refer in communicating with Representatives on the Committee:

Ellmers-Pingree-Gibson - #003 - the no-cost Farm to School provision
Walz-Noem-Fortenberry - #055 - Sodsaver provision, expected to save $66 million - half of which goes to restore Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (BFRDP) funding; the other half to budget deficit reduction.
Fortenberry-Walz - #097 - Beginning producer training, incuding a new BFRDP priority on veterans seeking to get into farming upon return to civilian life.  Also the Boswll-Gibson - #070 - to establish a USDA Military Veterans Agricultural Liaison.
Fudge-Fortenberry - #049 - Microloans for Beginning and Veteran Producers
Welch - 083 -Organic Crop Insurance Price Elections - essentially the same as the amendment in the Senate that lowered barriers to organic farmer participation in crop insurance.

Thanks for whatever you can do today.

Sincerely,

Mark
