Conversions of BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 Avid mxf files to mov or avi is
a big problem. The recording format is in the mxf file structure, not
just a mxf wrapper.
So far only Avids products can read this file.
Using -vodec copy gives errors.

Any ideas or suggestions ?

Hi,

If you share the file, I can have a look.

I really need this also, I'm not sure if anyone has uploaded something to you.  I have some footage, but the files, although compressed, still are still at a pretty high bit rate, so a 5 second clip is about 130mb. I'll try and post one up here. It looks like the video file is too big to post here.  If you have a place I can upload it, I'd be happy to do that.

Hi

You could just use mediafire or something in the mean time.

Ok set it up.  Here's the link to the video portion:

It looks like the Hyperdeck Shuttle (and I assume the Studio version also) creates a video file, then a number of audio files depending on how many channels of sound you're recording.  The sound channels I uploaded should be silent since I didn't record any audio.

If you need one with sound, I can record a quick clip in a bit.

Thanks so much for looking into it.

Yes thanks. There are a number of us following this issue.

There are many of us who would benefit from a way to import this into
NLE's such as Premiere.

Ok, so this file is using Clip Wrapping with a non-CBR index, and
this is not currently supported.
In order to support this, complete index support is needed, and this
will require some work to implement or backport,
and I'm a bit busy currently :/

Thanks much for your time, that's unfortunate.  Hopefully BMD can patch the firmware to wrap the DNxHD files in a QT or AVI wrapper for everyone who doesn't use Avid.  This would be huge competition to the Atomos Samurai / Ninja if they can fix this to work with a broader audience.

I need this also. I have a shoot in a few days and recording
Uncompressed just won't work for me. I need the DNxHD file size.

Has anybody tried the mxf tools from the bbc "ingex" project. I think
there was a MXF demuxer. Maybe you can remux video + audio after that
with ffmbc to quicktime.

Udo

ingex writeavidmxf.exe works with the Shuttle2 MXF files, but not all
the codec options produce a viable output file.

Hi,

It seems this feature has a lot of supporters.
If you guys come together and constitutes a pool, it could be
implemented pretty quickly.

I made a donation last week, as I've been feeling guilty since ffmbc
is so helpful. I've been meaning to do it, but this issue gave me
impetus. I should point out that Blackmagic Design has posted in their
forum on Creative Cow that they will be implementing an additional
codec for the Hyperdeck series with a firmware upgrade, so they
recognize the problem with these files. But DNxHD has some obvious
advantages, so the ability to convert the files to MOV would still be
really helpful.

Even if all you did was to allow a rewrap of the video MXF to MOV (no
muxing of the multiple audio tracks into a A/V MXF file), that would
be great, because Premiere Pro reads the audio MXFs fine.

Hi Baptiste,

it would be a lot easier for "us" to organize if you would set up some
kind of list where you offer new functions for a specific ammount of
money. And if there are enough donations for a specific function you
start writing it :-). Maybe different paypal buttons or
flattr-buttons. Or you could use one of the crowd funding sites...

Udo

I thought the whole point of MXF is that it would solve all compatibility
problems everywhere and forever and make it rain kittens.

Well, not sure if it helps, but according to some people, FFplay is able to
play Avid MXF.
(does not work on my system though....)

The problem is not with reading Avid MXF files. The problem is that
the Hyperdeck Shuttle produces three MXF files for each clip, one for
the DNxHD video and two PCM audio tracks for the left and right
channels. These three files have some information in their metadata
about the other two files and most software out there other than Avid
MC and a third party QT importer get tangled up in that information
when trying to read the files. I'm sure Baptiste could explain it a
lot better, but that's the gist of the issue. There is a similar issue
with ffmbc that was pointed out here:

Just an update on this issue.  Today BMD released HyperDeck utility Beta 2.5 which among other things, gives you the option to record Avid DNxHD files in a quicktime wrapper.  If you just download the free codec from Avid, you can import these files directly into Premier, FCP etc.  It also adds record trigger through SDI star/stop or TC and even adds capturing timecode over SDI.

This makes the Shuttle 2 an incredible buy with SDI and HDMI 10 bit recording, HDMI -> SDI converter, SDI -> HDMI converter, uncompressed and compressed recording options for 350 bucks.  In comparison, JUST the one way HDMI -> SDI converter from Atomos is $350!  If you order one for SDI, BE SURE to order the DIN to BNC adapter cables at the same time, they're impossible to find, at least here in Honolulu.

As soon as I get home, I'll record a few clips with the Quicktime wrapper and post them up.

They seem to read properly, at list under Win 7 x64. Thanks again.

The Avid DNxHD is own by Avid and they do have a single MXF file per
track ( 1 for video and 1 for each channel of audio ). The reason why
do this is because its called Avid DNxHD and thats the reason as to
why it only works fluidly with Avid.

If you don't plan to use Avid as the primary NLE, then stay away from DNxHD.

Geez!

rc7 windows ffmbc seems to be able to copy the DNXHD hyperdeck mxf
files to a quicktime dnxhd mov file no problem.

Blackmagic new firmware will allow you to record quicktime mov DNXHd
instead of Avid mxf if you prefer !

Merci, merci beaucoup baptiste!

I was able to rewrap the files. However, the audio channel is still an
issue.

This command works
ffmbc -i Capture0000V.mxf -vcodec copy -i Capture0000A1.mxf -acodec
copy -i Capture0000A2.mxf -acodec copy Capture0000.mov -strict
experimental -newaudio

This one should allow us to retain both audio channels.
ffmbc -y -i Capture0001V.mxf -i Capture0001A1.mxf -i Capture0001A1.mxf
-vcodec copy -map_audio_channel 1:0:0:0:1:0 -map_audio_channel
2:0:0:0:1:1 -acodec pcm_s16le -ac 2 -f mov Capture0001.mov

But I only get a mono file. Any idea why ?

Got my answer, stupid mistake as I repeated *A1.mxf in the command.
Fixed now!
