N&N tandem dump trailer for behind my 1/2 ton, bought new a couple years ago from dealer that's not around anymore decided to start blowing fuses the other day. It has the hydraulic power pack for the cylinder to raise and lower the dump box. Its wired into the trailer light plug in going to the truck to charge the trailer battery. There is a 20A flat spade fuse in the harness to the trailer battery that is mounted on the trailer. When I raise the dump box (with trailer plugged into truck) it will run for maybe 5 seconds and you can watch the fuse pop. But if I unplug the cord from the truck and have a new fuse in it, won't pop the fuse the entire time the box is going up and down. ??? This has only started doing this in the past month or so (winter). Before that, the battery was charging just fine and the fuse wasn't popping.

So is the problem with the wire between the truck and the trailer or is the problem on the truck? I don't use it a lot in the winter but there could be some road salt on it - perhaps corroding something?

A 7 way circuit tester that plugs in the pickup outlet is only around 14.00 and they work great. Very unlikely its the pickup as other than the outlet terminals themselves, modern pickup trailer wiring is sealed and pretty Bullitt proof. Trailers are a different matter. I have rewired my 5th wheel flatbed because of failed wiring. My daughter has a 8-10 year old fancy aluminum horse trailer and that thing will blow the brake controller fuse every once in a while. Not often enough to tear into it yet as the lights still work.

It sounds like it is trying to draw amps through the charge wire. Maybe the battery is getting weak or there is a bad connection between the battery and the pump solenoid. You could always put a switch on the charge line. Off to use dump, on to charge.

All sound like good suggestions guys, thank you! I'll have a look at it likely the first of the week. Sounds like the next 3 - 4 days are gonna be cold with the North wind. Even though I store it in a tarp shed, that wind gets nasty blowing under the tarp door.

It certainly could be the trailer battery being low (since I don't use it much in winter) and it drawing so much to raise the fully loaded box? The battery and pump is all inside an aluminum box at front of trailer, so it is out of the weather at least - so that's a start. The terminals on the battery itself were clean - but will need to look at the other points suggested.

The odd part is it just started doing it - always had truck running before when raising the box and no issues with it. So like the thought its possibly corrosion OR the battery in trailer is weak/low.....

I keep a battery tender on my dump trailer all the time when parked. Only way to keep battery charged. When I was shopping for a new dump trailer, I noticed that a lot of them offer a built in charger, all you have to do is plug in an extension cord into the outlet on the box. Pretty sweet!

I am slowly putting the hard wired tender leads on all my equipment, started with the Harley, then dump trailer, and I have leads to hook up on my Kubota tractors and my Yamaha quad. That way I rotate the charging and easily plug in the charger to give whatever equipment a boost before I need it.

Not exactly. I put a solar charger on the dump trailer we have at work. There are 4 trucks and 3 tractors that regularly pull it and it made more sense to have one charger on the trailer than one on every vehicle. And, where it is parked, there is no outlet nearby. They use it a lot and have never had the battery down to where it wouldn't lift. The system is a pulsetec sp5 . I made a slanted holder for it right in front of the battery box.

I had a portable solar panel I used to use when I parked away from power. What I meant was that if you don't use it a lot, you need some sort of charger, can't rely on the truck to charge it up especially on short trips. I thought about mounting a panel on the lid of the box and having it hardwired to always have a charger.

I have one of those "trickle chargers" on the trailer. I neglected to plug it in this week. I normally plug it in a day or two before I know I'm going to use it a lot to make sure the battery has a nice charge. yeah, dip sh*t forgot to do it this time and that's likely what the problem is.

I just don't like leaving the extension cord laying out in the driveway going to the tarp shed all the time. I don't like to "announce" that I have something in there that needs power to it to the general public. WAY too many prying eyes around the neighborhood. Things tend to grow legs easily.... I have everything locked up around here. I figure the cost of some locks will at the very least slow some people down or at least keep all the honest people away!

Some day I'd like to put a small solar panel on the South side of the shed for this - or run a dedicated receptacle to it from the side of the shed to inside the tarp shed? That way the cord doesn't have to lay out in the driveway.

Mine is always setup the same way. Often I've wondered why it doesnt blow the fuse on the truck because I've tried to use it plenty with a low battery. It has never blown that and I have no idea how. There are 0 provisions to prevent it from doing so.

Just search for an automotive circuit breaker. There are different types. Some look like a regular blade type fuse. Others are a small box that mounts with a couple screws and has a couple of studs for the wires.

"This is an ongoing event. We're still in response mode," Gov. John Bel Edwards said, urging residents to heed warnings to evacuate and not rely on their past experiences because the state has never seen flooding like this before.

In Baker, just north of Baton Rouge, residents said they had to be rescued by boats or wade though waist-deep, snake-infested water to reach dry ground. Dozens of them awoke Saturday morning on cots at a makeshift Red Cross shelter only a few blocks from their flooded homes and cars.

John Mitchell, 23, said he swam to safety with his pit bull after police officers in a boat picked up his 20-year-old girlfriend, Haybriel Thomas; her 1 year-old daughter, Kaylee; and Mitchell's father.

Shanita Angrum, 32, said she called 911 on Friday morning when she realized flood waters had trapped her family in their home. A police officer carried her 6-year-old daughter, Khoie, on his back while she and her husband waded behind them for what "felt like forever."
