I just started with developing android apps (with java, in android studio, if that matters), and I'm doing a little project, just for fun. I want to create my own chess app, and so far I have done quite a few things. I set up a menu to switch to another activity which is the game itself, i made a customview with a self painted board, and I think my model is also almost complete. The only thing I don't understand is how to handle a drag. So, when you move one piece from a position to another position with a dragging gesture, how do you get the begin- and endpoints of that?

Chess for Androidconsists of a chess engine (a Java version derivedfrom the C++ engine BikJump) and a GUI.The application accepts moves through the touch screen, trackball,or keyboard (e2e4 pushes the king pawn, e1g1 castles king side, etc.).An optional "move coach" highlights valid user movesduring input and last played engine move. Full game navigationenables users to correct mistakes or analyze games.Games import and export as FEN/PGN to and from the clipboardor via sharing, load and save as file, or are set up througha position editor. A draw by stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty move rule, or threefold repetition is recognized. The engine plays at various levels (including random, againstitself in auto-play, or free-play, where the game can be usedas a "magnetic chessboard"). The user can play either side and, independently, view the board from the perspective of white or black.

The application supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI)and Chess Engine Communication Protocol (WinBoard and XBoard),which allows users to play against more powerful third partyengines or even play tournaments between engines(UCI and XBoard Protocols for Android andAndroid chess engines tournaments). Engines are imported in Android Open Exchange format (OEX), inAndroid Chessbase compatible format, or (when allowed) directly from SD card. Engine setup features time control, pondering, infinite analysis, hash tables, multiple threads, endgame tablebases, and opening test suites. The application connects to an external electronic chessboard(Certabo, Chessnut, ChessUp, House of Staunton, DGT, or Millennium) and online to either FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) or ICC (Internet Chess Club).

Chess by AI Factory Limited is one of the most popular chess games on mobile. It has all of the basic stuff. It also includes 12 levels of difficulty, casual and pro play modes, achievements, leaderboards, and even cloud saving. The interface is simple. However, there are eight chessboard themes. The free version has no in-app purchases, but it does have ads. You can buy the $0.99 version to remove them. Chess by Chess.com is another good app in this genre that acts very similarly.

Chess Openings Trainer is a chess training app. It helps you learn how to do good chess opens and how to transition from openings into the mid-game. The tool watches your moves and then immediately moves in order to specifically target your weaknesses. You get better over time and so does the app. There are also flash cards with random openings to play from, PNG file support, and it uses the famous Stockfish chess engine. The pro version adds some extra features from the free version as well.

CT-ART is among the best chess games for those who want to learn. It features 2,200 basic exercises, 1,800 auxiliary exercises, and 50 topics to learn. Each exercise has a different goal and is meant to teach you a different tactic. Additionally, the game will keep track of your ELO improvement as you progress through the app. It might be better classified as an instructional app rather than a game. However, learning all the little tactics does actually require you to play chess.

Thank you for reading. Try these out too:

Let's all take a moment to pay our respects, however, to a mobile app that has truly stood the test of time. We haven't always been perfect, but we've always been committed to improving the experience for our players, offering them new features, and giving them what is arguably the pre-eminent live chess experience on mobile.

The new app will have proper dependency injection with Dagger2 and its dagger.android package right from the get-go, rather than jamming it in with a crowbar 10 years after the fact. What does this mean? It means improved testability (and therefore stability), better memory management, and a clear separation of concerns between object creation and object use. I will be writing a much more technical post about this later -- stay tuned!

For Ubutnu or other Operating Systems you should use recommended software to transfer your files. There is a good article here -to-transfer-files-from-to-an-android-device for Ubuntu users and plenty of options.

However, learning the basics is just the beginning. It takes time and practice to master the skills to handle the many possible variations in a game. Mathematician Claude Shannon calculated that there are 1043 possible legal moves in a chess game.

Like many classic games, chess is available as a computer application for almost every computing platform, including smartphones. This roundup includes seven different open source Android applications that chess enthusiasts should check out. With these apps you can play chess against your phone or an online opponent, study and analyze chess games, turn your phone into a basic chess clock, and even organize a chess tournament. All of these apps are in the F-Droid repository, which is an excellent resource for users who want to avoid the Google Play store, and only use purely open source software on their Android device.

Chess Walk is a simple, basic chess program. Players compete against a computer opponent, or against an online opponent via the Free Internet Chess Server. Beyond that, Chess Walk offers few extra features, and while it might not do as much as some of the other chess programs on this list, it is the perfect choice for a user looking for an lightweight app that does one thing and does it well. Chess Walk's source code is hosted on GitLab, and the app is licensed under the GPLv3.

DroidFish is built on the Cuckoochess and StockFish chess engines. It supports a wide variety of game modes, including two players playing on the same device, and two computer players playing each other. The app supports opening books and endgame tables, displays arrows showing possible moves, and has an analysis mode and a blind play mode. If Scid on the go (see below) is installed, DroidFish can read the Scid files, allowing the user to review chess games inside DroidFish. With so many features aimed at helping users study and improve their chess game, DroidFish is an excellent choice for a user wanting an app for digging deep into strategy.

Scid on the go is a mobile viewer for Shane's Chess Information Database files. These files are collections of chess games for study and review. The version of Scid on the go in F-Droid has not been updated since 2013, but the version in the Google Play Store has a version that was updated in May of 2015. Despite the fact that the F-Droid version is somewhat outdated, it can fetch and import files from The Week in Chess magazine with no problems, but it does seem to have issues connecting to ChessOK. Released under the GPLv2, Scid on the go's source code is hosted on Google Code, and there does not seem to be a more up-to-date repository.

ChessWatch is one of the two chess clock applications available in F-Droid. It turns an Android device into a impromptu chess clock, but it is not as nice as using a real chess clock. Use it to set the initial time on the clock, and the amount of time added to each player's time after each move. The clock uses the Fischer delay method for adding time to the clock. The button for ending a turn is very small, and most of the screen is just wasted space. ChessWatch's source code is available on GitHub, and the project uses the GPLv2.

The other chess clock available in F-Droid, Simple Chess Clock, is a little more robust than ChessWatch. Simple Chess Clock supports setting the initial start time and delay time. It can also supports three different delay methods: none, Bronstein, or Fisher. The buttons for each player are much larger than ChessWatch's, and are located at the edge of the screen, making it a little easier to use. Simple Chess Clock is released under GPLv3, with source code on GitHub.

Playing against a computer or an online opponent is a rewarding experience, but it is not as exciting as playing a real person, face-to-face. Swiss Chess Tournament is a simple app for setting up a Swiss-system tournament. In a Swiss tournament, players play against opponents with similar rankings in each round without having repeat matches. While the app would benefit from some usability enhancements, this Apache2-licensed application is good enough for setting up a basic chess tournament for smaller groups. Swiss Chess Tournament's source code is on GitHub.

Whether you're here because of Queen's Gambit or you're just looking for some chess on your phone, we have you covered. From games that keep things simple to trainers for those who want to shake things up a bit, this list of the best chess games for Android is bound to have something for you, regardless of your skill level.

AI Factory Limited's chess app is considered by many, including me, to be the default chess experience on Android, and it's truly the best option for people who just want to play chess. It's down-to-Earth and basic on the surface but has many features lying beneath. This is one of the only games I keep installed on my Pixel at all times.

This game uses the Treebeard chess engine, which some claim has a more "human" feel to it. You have 12 levels of play, from Novice to Expert, and a choice between Casual and Pro modes. There's a built-in tutor, insight into the CPU thought process, stats, achievements, leaderboards, and an ELO rating. That's not even everything included here, but if you want chess on your Android device, this is the one we recommend.
