Pentatonix takes this song from being a melancholic lament into a reflective and contemplative melody about seeing yourself alone. It is still mournful about the silence that the singer is forced to endure and the band team members have all of their talents on full display as they pay homage to this masterful musical number. Each one of them brings something different to the table and likewise, their united abilities show how far they have come as a band. Of course, do not take my word for it. The YouTube video already has over 2 million views as of the writing of this review.

"The Sound of Silence" by Pentatonix is a cover of the classic folk song by Simon & Garfunkel, which explores themes of isolation, loss of communication, and the power of silence in our lives. The lyrics describe a person who is disconnected from the world and feels lonely, walking through the city streets and observing people who talk without communicating, listen without hearing, and write songs that never get shared. The vision that planted in his brain still remains within the sound of silence, reflecting on how silence could speak louder than words.

The songwriter sees silence as a symbol of truth that people often neglect in their fast-paced, noisy lives. He wants to share his insights with others, but his words fall like raindrops, failing to reach others. In contrast, people have become slaves to the neon signs, which have replaced the wisdom of the prophets written on subway walls and tenement halls.

In 1965, a producer named Tom Wilson remixed the original acoustic version of the song, adding electric instruments, which gave it a more contemporary folk-rock sound. This new version was released as a single, and it became a massive success, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

[Scott Hoying]
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain still remains
Within the sound of silence

[Mitch Grassi]
In restless streams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
Beneath the halo of a streetlamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

[Kirstin Maldonado]
Fools, said I, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

[Scott Hoying & All]
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said
The words of the prophets are
Written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence
