Hi All-

We’re hosting a happy hour this Friday at 5:45 pm at Not Your Average Joe’s in Bethesda. This will be a special chance to say farewell to Trent Wertz who is moving away after an incredible 26 years of playing with our group. Many of us know Trent for his abilities to craft some competitive teams or throw his laser-guided hammer. Let's come together to celebrate all he’s brought to our group! (Happy hour specials at the restaurant end at 6 so get those drink orders in early).

For those interested in one last game with Trent, he’ll be joining Friday's morning game—weather-permitting, let’s get a great turnout to make it a memorable send-off. Look for the sign up email tomorrow afternoon on the AM-list if you’re interested in playing.

I hope to see everyone there to raise a glass to Trent and all the fun times we’ve shared!

All the Best,
Dan

Folks-

I wish I could get there tonight, but I'm now living at the Delaware shore and Jeannie and have company coming today.

Trent and I started playing with the USEC Ultimate group (now Fernwood) the same week...maybe even the exact same day, playing on the old "noon game" field at Lockheed Martin. He was a difference-maker from day one.  And no one in our group's history regularly made more evenly-matched teams than Trent (sorry, Rose, Dan and John Adams). When players lobbied that his proposed teams seemed unfair, Trent was always quick to say, "Let's try 'em, see how it goes."  He was rarely wrong.

A few other memories:
  • My favorite quote of Trent's, when someone, including himself, dropped an easy pass or threw a really dumb throw, is,"I hate when that happens!" I "borrow" it regularly when I'm playing pickleball, you know that game for the elderly and near-dead.
  • Trent's all-around Ultimate talent was always top five in our group, but it's his hammer passes that are legendary.
  • I'll let Trent tell the story tonight about how women's underwear was unexpectedly found in the Frisbee laundry, as I can't do it justice. But I'll say Trent's good reputation is not in jeopardy.
  • Trent's son Travis and my son Caz, who are both now in their late thirties, started playing with us when they were around ten years old, maybe younger. They mostly joined us on holidays and spring/summer breaks, until they finished college. Both have been Fernwood regulars at times since then. I always loved it when they were both there but I know Caz wasn't ever thrilled about having to cover Travis.
  • There was a guy -- who will remain nameless -- who played with us for about two years, who was -- hard to believe -- a LOT SLOWER than ME, and Trent would regularly set the teams so that I had to cover him. Thank you, Trent, for that humbling repeated experience. 😎
Yes, thank you Trent for the soo many years of friendship, super fun Ultimate, and organizing the games with Rose and Dan. Also, thank you for your sportsmanship. You always demonstrated it as I think the word was intended to mean.

Best,

_bill (aka _waterboy)

PS. Dallas Sucks! ; )

I agree.  I LOVE the guy and always will.  Trent  accepted me into the group when I was 62 years old.  LOL.  I loved playing with everyone on the field.  Even though I wasn't the best player, Trent knew how to choose teams so my deficiencies were not impactful.  I also loved my nicknames like "Dress Socks" and "Bill Always Open'. LOL.  Gee, one of the best times in my life, even more fun than exploding nuclear weapons in Nevada. LOL.

Best of luck, Trent!!

Thanks for all the kind words. A lot of great memories over the last 26 years. If you’re ever in the Chattanooga area give me a shout. Hopefully I’ll be up this way on occasion and can make it for a game. Bill Rubacky, congrats on the move. Getting out of the DC area has been a priority!

Trent, I wish you the best.  Thank you for introducing me to Ultimate.  I think that my Ultimate days are coming to an end.  My achilles are not cooperating.   It is my goal also to get the heck out of the DMV.  I am heading West in the near future.  Farewell, Trent.

Trent,

When my office set up shop on Rockledge Drive in 2001, I could not believe my luck when I realized that a band of knuckleheads had a regular game of ultimate going on the back lawn of Lockheed Martin’s corporate HQ.  Then, to find out that there was a morning game too?  Heaven.  I always appreciated how ably you and Rose managed the mailing list, and prodded the crew to show up, and divided us fairly, so we could ball (disc) out and get a day’s worth of exercise in less than an hour.

Over the years, amidst all of the great on-line trash talking, I always enjoyed just the right mix of competitiveness and comradery.  I think your example rubbed off on the group.  I’ve been lucky to play ultimate all over the country, and see a lot of versions of what the founders of the sport refer to as “spirit of the game,” but it was never embodied as well as I witnessed on those lumpy fields at Fernwood and Stratton Park under your leadership.

I’ve been out of the rotation for years, but not out of the loop thanks to this mailing list.  I have missed all the old timers, but the list has made it easier.  You have picked a cool place to settle in Chattanooga.  Everyone should visit.  I know that if I am passing through, I will look you up.  Better leave a light on.

The very best of luck to you, my good man.

Silver Bullet – be sure to send the picture from yesterday’s HHour.

Great stories, myths, and historical (in)accuracies were shared with frisbeers old and young.

Thanks Trent for allowing me to cover the slower non-pickle ball folk to love the sport and this group!

Great pics, Colonel Schoettler!

Trent!  So sorry and bummed I couldn’t make the game, and now to learn I missed the Happy Hour that I could have actually made but missed the email.. UGH!

Thanks again for being such a calm steady presence in our games over the years, and all the background work along with Rose and others to pull as all together.  I’ll never forget Bill Rubacky up in our Netscape office pointing down to the Lockheed field and badgering me for at least a few months to play before I finally stepped onto (or into?) that mud pit of Canadian Goose fertilizer and slopped it up with the early crew.  That field was an ankle hazard!

And so many more years of fond memories and experiences with so many of you!  All growing and learning new skills together (except for KAM of course, who 20 years later still can’t throw a hammer…).  And to share my favorite Trent saying, “..Come with me said the spider to the fly”..  Didn’t matter how gassed we were!  Seriously, though, hats off to The Godfather, and we look forward to your next visit to DC.  WE WILL PLAY AGAIN!

P.S. Colonel Shoettler, who’s this creepy photo bomber from the Happy Hour??
