Lazy loading is a broad term for a computer programming technique that consists of delaying the initialization, or construction of an object until it is needed. On the web, this is mostly applied to the images of a website.

Lazy loading takes a different approach and is a technique that is used on almost every modern website. For example, you can see this effect on the store CandyLand. This website displays a large quantity of products and, as you scroll down the list, you see the product images change from faded and low in contrast, to clear and high-quality visuals.

One of the most common methods of employing lazy loading is to display a low-quality image as a placeholder. That way, every image on the page is still loaded, but the page will appear much faster thanks to the very small size of the images. However, a low-resolution image means that it looks pixelated and full of artifacts, which will make it seem like the image is of poor quality.

Update as of January 2020: Please note that Shopify has ended support for Slate. You can continue to use the tool and fork the repo to suit your own needs, however you do so at your own risk. You can learn more about our reasons for ending Slate support on the Slate GitHub page.

Different libraries exist to take care of lazy loading images, removing the need to create the logic behind the code from scratch. For this article, we are going to use the latest version of Slate, our theme development toolkit, and the barebone theme that is included with it, aptly named Starter Theme.

For these snippets to work, you will need three dependencies. There are many libraries available, but the one Slate uses is Lazysizes. You will also need Responsive Image as a Service (RIAS), which will take care of loading the correct image sizes with our CDN and BGSet for background images (in your hero images for instance).

These dependencies can be found bundled in the JavaScript file of the Starter Theme. There are different methods that you can use to load them, however, for the purpose of this example, we will assume that the files are simply uploaded to the assets folder of your theme.

The src attribute is where you specify your placeholder image. This image will be what the user sees while the original image is loading. The data-src attribute is where the original, full-size image, is called.

You can change the size of the placeholder image by modifying the filter img_url in the src parameter. The default value is 300x which means that the image that will be temporarily displayed will have a resolution of 300px.

By changing the value from 300x to 1x, you will display such a tiny image that it will just render the dominant color of the image. An added advantage is that since the image that we are loading is very small, it will load almost instantly.

We can also combine these two techniques and serve a solid color placeholder that has a blurry effect, by keeping blur-up in the classes and setting the img_url parameter to 1x. This blur will add a soft touch to the image, resulting in a placeholder image that looks less harsh.

This article was geared towards how lazy loading works in Slate. If you would like to learn more about lazy loading in general, we recommend this very complete article from CSS Tricks, which goes into detail looking at various techniques and libraries that can be used.

Stamped seamlessly integrates with all Shopify themes. This article teaches you how to install the Stamped app, main widget, and script for Shopify 2.0 and Shopify Vintage themes.

Use the jump links below to navigate to the correct instructions for your Shopify theme type.

For most Shopify users, the Stamped script will automatically install into the theme.liquid file. If it does not, follow the instructions below, as this must be completed to add Stamped Widgets to Shopify sites.

For Vintage Theme and Shopify 2.0, if you are unable to find the title tag in product-card.liquid or product-grid-item.liquid, please look for the tag in any of the following files and paste in any one of the templates:

The Star Rating Badge shows the review count on your product pages and indicates the average star rating for a given product. The Star Rating Badge code is usually installed in the same file as the Main Widget code. Follow the below instructions to install in your theme:

The Star Rating Badge shows the review count on your product pages and indicates the average star rating. For installation on a non-product page the steps are the same as section b. However there is one major key difference for non-product pages.

In the Advanced Settings, there will be a checkbox option titled Is Featured Product. You will need to both enable this and add a Product Handle to this badge for the given product. A Product Handle is the tail end of the URL of a product page. Example: -demo.com/products/relaxed-fit-coat -> relaxed-fit-coat in this case is the Product Handle.

The Main Widget showcases product reviews on specific product pages and includes an option to write a review for the product. It is designed to showcase reviews on product pages specific to each product with an option to write a review.

Once copied, click Save.

Note: Some themes have different structures and you may have to add the widget code in a different template. Reach out to Stamped support for guidance.

Some of the templates you can look for are:

The Star Rating Badge shows your review count on product pages and indicates ratings with the average number of stars. The Badge code is usually installed in the same file as the Main Widget code, and is located under the product title information.

For theme file installation, you can find where you added the widgets originally or refer the step #2 and step #3 to find the widgets and manually comment out or remove them.

For Shopify 2.0, you can simply go to Online Store - Themes - Customize, find the product templates and click "remove block" or "remove section":

Any change or update of your current theme may remove Stamped's widget codes. If this happens, you will need to reinstall your Stamped widgets in the live theme by following the appropriate installation steps above.

Please note on non-product pages, the Main Widget loses its Write a Review functionality. However, you can link the self-hosted Write a Review page on the top of the Widget to allow customers to submit a general review.

If you use HTML in your rich text editor, then it might cause display errors on your storefront. Copying content from another site might also add unwanted HTML that can cause display errors. You can click the Show HTML button to view the HTML code and remove any unwanted HTML or HTML that is causing a display error, such as text outside of the margins.

If you want to embed a video or music widget, then you need to first host it on a service like Youtube, Vimeo, or SoundCloud. These services generate an embed code, which you can copy and paste into your Shopify admin rich text editor.

With the Formatting button, you can quickly create paragraphs, headings, or blockquotes. Using the right formatting and heading levels helps people and search engines to read your website's content.

You can insert tables in your blog posts, pages, product descriptions, and collection descriptions with the rich text editor. You can place text, images, or even videos into a table after you create it.

You can insert links (hyperlinks) in blog posts, pages, product descriptions, and collection descriptions with the rich text editor. You can add links that direct customers to pages within your Shopify online store and to other websites. You can also add links that open email messages or make phone calls, to help customers contact you.

To link to a specific page of your online store, such as a collection or product page, use the URL format /page-type/page-handle. For example, to link to a collection you've created called Summer Collection, use the URL /collections/summer-collection.
