Susan Thistlethwaite penned a strong pro-trans statement in her current Substack. We at WATER join her in celebrating this Trans Day of Visibility. Thanks, Susan. Hearty greetings to trans colleagues on this special day.

Christian theology needs to do its part in rejecting male/female binaries that have been carried along for so many centuries as a structure for gender oppression and male privilege.

There are sometimes theological glimmers that cast a little light on the fact that God can be seen through multiple gender lenses as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The male and the female flow in one being as the Hebrew word for Spirit (ruach) is feminine.
There are several ways in which seeing God as transgender helps counter the appalling prejudice against transgender people, a prejudice being promoted solely for political gain.
The God who is transgender created transgender people in her, his, their image and they are God’s beloved children. Sacred. Blessed. Perfect. (Leave them alone in other words.)
Gender fluidity itself is sacred, a particularly lovely part of the creation. Our genders ebb and flow rather like tides, rising in some manifestations and flowing back in others. As an example, being an old lady has taught me that I am flowing out and not having to represent the ‘pretty blond girl or woman’ that I have had to deal with so much of my life. Oh, it is so nice.
Visibility is crucial as God is visible in the creation. Wind, sun, rain, pleasure, pain, growth and decay are all God at work in the world.
You just have to look up and see. God is there.
The cruel and greedy politicians who are ginning up transphobia for their own gain want you to render folks invisible. It is easier to exploit people if you pretend they don’t exist.
Transgender people being visible is an act of solidarity with the sacredness of all creation.
Of course we need to carry this commitment to the visibility of transgender people throughout the year and also let God’s incredible natures be seen as well.
God be with you.
