Hi all,

For those not in the feminist brighton meeting last week, we are using this email group for a while to discuss a response to the website, aims and arguments of the brighton and hove men's network.  Here's the site again:  http://brightonmanplan.wordpress.com/

Here's what we agreed on Tuesday:

- Read website and discuss reactions, thoughts, possible arguments on the email group - all.  This should try and be completed by the 31st July.

- Split website pages into sections and assign to group members who want to be involved, to go through in more detail and write responses etc.  Two people will be ideally assigned to each section.

- Editorial group to get together and put responses into a document that we are happy to send to the men's network - whole group to be able to check it first.  Response will be sent with an invitation to attend an open discussion meeting organised by feminist brighton (and other local women's services, if they are interested).

- Contact Fawsett society for advice - Laura.

- Contact women's services - did we decide this?

Jackie recommended using statistics and research from Kat Banyard's latest book, The Equality Illusion.

Feel free to start posting comments!

This isn't strictly relevant - but could be! -  I'm going to the book signing this Friday 29th at the Old Market at 6.30pm - Caitlin Moran will be signing copies and talking about her book
"How to Be a Woman".
Tickets £8 from City Books -  01273 725 306
It should be funny and thought-provoking and it would be great to see any of you there.
Sorry to have missed meetings lately.

Hi all,

I think that although it perhaps wasn’t officially agreed, the general feeling was that we would contact other women’s groups? I have set about the (mammoth) task of mapping the website and putting it into a database for use when we need it.

dear all
not specific to any particular part of the blokes web site - but I did notice that they seem to use quite a lot of quotes from either the press or people who add comments to their web site.  It seemed to me that they use the quotes to say some rather controvertial things - perhaps things they want to say themselves? but the quotes allow them to not have to take responsibility for saying these things - or, being very naive and generous perhaps they want to include controvertial quotes to stimulate debate - BUT, no debate follows on from any of the controvertial quotes - that I could see.   I think we have to suggest to them that they are editorially responsible for all material included on their web site - they can't really include anti feminist or sexist stuff and excuse it by saying they didn't write it themselves!
best wishes jackie

Just a quick update to say that the Fawsett society have responded to my email and they are very interested.  They may not be able to do something directly but watch this space.

Sorry I couldn't make the meeting last week, sound as if it was really interesting. I've had a quick look at the website and in principle it doesn't seem such a bad thing. There are issues around men's health, safety etc which it is great they are trying to address themselves rather than waiting for women to do it for them! But some of the comments on the website are the typical misogynistic stuff that appears any time there is an article in the press about anything which can be perceived as a woman's issue. As theirs is a wordpress website there is a fairly straightforward system they could put in place to ensure all comments have to be moderated before they go on to the public site. I am particularly concerned about the reporting of DV and lack of balance about child contact issues and reasons why fathers are not allowed access to their children.

Not so long ago I saw this tender for someone to write a local women's strategy for B & H. It would be useful to get in touch with Lisa Dando at the Women's Centre about this if noone has done so already.

Best wishes

Margaret Hallah

Hi everyone,
Am just having a look at the Mens Network website (no mention yet of the fact that the whole of our society has been designed (by men) throughout history to achieve their aims for them) ...and I'm curious as to the context that this has come to our attention - can anyone tell me, have they contacted us? And if so what have they said?
Thanks,

X k

Hello everyone,

I have just found out that I won't have the internet for the next two weeks (I have just moved house and that's the earliest we can get a call out) so I won't be able to fully map the men's network site for analysis for quite some time. I have done a few sections an am happy to forward on my work if anyone would like to complete it?

Kerry

Hey
I could probably do some of it over the next few weeks.  I'm going to contact the women's centre as well today, does anyone think we should arrange a proper meeting about this in the next few weeks to get things going?

Hey,

I mentioned the Brighton Men's Network to my boss and he said he knows the guys who set it up ("they are really nice guys", he says). Not sure if this is a help but it might be a nice way to break the ice potentially.

Otherwise, look forward to catching up at the meeting next Tues.
