Have you guys seen this? Amazon thought I might like it.And no, I'm not planning to buy it -- I am perfectly capableof cutting my own stick and installing it but am intrigued juston general principles. Would this be a good thing for a novice?
Just interested in your opinions...
Quite useless methinks. I got started in Linux by collecting CD's, each with a Linux distribution. They were sold for a few dollars online or given away at Linux events. I probably still have a fair number of these CD's in boxes and binders buried somewhere. The problem was they would be obsolete on arrival. We take for granted the ease of obtaining and installing upgrades. That wasn't the case when I initially obtained these Linux CD's. In place upgrades were rather sketchy in the mid 1990's and internet download speeds were very slow. There were delays between hardware arrival and the availability of compatible drivers. Meanwhile, the Linux version on a CDROM or bootable flash drive rapidly became obsolete. For example, the "Light World Zoo" edition mentioned above has Linux Mint 22.1 while the latest (download) version is 22.2. Why not just download and run the latest version from a flash drive? Don't like it? Just download some other Linux distribution and try again.
Anyway, if you want to test drive various Linux mutations, get a high speed internet connection and download/update as needed.
Don't know which distribution to try? Start
