I want to let Steve's friends at the park know that he passed away on
Wednesday, February 11, 2009. Many of us knew Steve and his beloved
French Bull Dogs. When I first met Steve, he had Irv, Stella and
Torque. All three wore cowbells; you couldn't miss them. More
recently he walked Izzy and Torque. Following is his obituary. He
will be sadly missed.

Medford - Steven J. Federico

Steven J. Federico, 50, of Medford, died February 11, 2009. He was the
husband of Catherine (LaPuma) Federico.

Mr. Federico was born in Medford, the son of Dominic and Joanne
(Iannuzzi) Federico.

He was a graduate of Somerville High School, Class of 1977. A plumber
by trade, he was skilled in many construction areas.

Mr. Federico will be remembered as a kind and gentle advocate for
animals. He loved the outdoors, and he would often walk with his two
beloved dogs, Izzy and Torque.

He was also a fan of weight lifting and bodybuilding. Friends and
family describe him as a man with a big heart, with lots of love for
his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Joseph and
Christopher Federico of Medford, Steven J. Federico Jr. of Somerville;
and a granddaughter Alexis Federico.

He leaves his parents, Dominic and Joanne (Iannuzzi) Federico of
Medford; two brothers, David Federico and his wife, Grace, of
Burlington, Michael Federico and his wife, Lisa, of Billerica.

He was the son-in-law of Catherine LaPuma of Somerville and the late
Joseph LaPuma.

He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and
uncles.

At the request of the family, visitation is private. Relatives and
friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Mass to be
celebrated on Monday, February 16, at 11 a.m. in St. Raphael Church,
512 High St., Medford. Arrangements are by Dello Russo Funeral Home of
Medford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Federico’s name may be sent
to the MSPCA-Angell Memorial Animal Hospital, 350 South Huntington
Ave., Boston, MA 02130.

Condolences may be sent at www.dellorusso.net.

I'm so sorry. Steve was a warm and reassuring (about human nature)
presence at the Fells. I thought he showed remarkable emotional
intelligence, about people and dogs, both. He seemed so strong and
healthy. Does anyone know what happened?

Steve also used to bring his neighbor's dog to the Sheepfold-- Bowie,
the border collie. He was a very gentle dog-- obsessed with chasing
his tennis ball.
Steve will be missed.
