The Cambridge Program is an accelerated method of academic study offered solely through a division of the University of Cambridge. Cambridge provides a flexible, broad-based curriculum that is offered at schools and colleges in over 161 countries and is recognized by the Florida Department of Education as a rigorous curriculum. The Cambridge Program recognizes that meaningful education is more than just building subject knowledge and conceptual understanding. To thrive in life, learners must also develop a broad range of skills, values, attitudes, and behaviors. The five Cambridge learner attributes are:

Confident:
Cambridge students are secure in their knowledge, unwilling to take things for granted and ready to take intellectual risks. They are keen to explore and evaluate ideas and arguments in a structured, critical, and analytical way. They can communicate and defend views and opinions as well as respect those of others.

Responsible:
Cambridge students take ownership of their learning, set targets, and insist on intellectual integrity. They are collaborative and supportive. They understand that their actions have impacts on others and on the environment. They appreciate the importance of culture, context, and community.

Reflective:
Cambridge students understand themselves as learners. They are concerned with the processes as well as the products of their learning and develop the awareness and strategies to be lifelong learners.

Innovative:
Cambridge students welcome new challenges and meet them resourcefully, creatively, and imaginatively. They can apply their knowledge and understanding to solve new and unfamiliar problems. They can adapt flexibly to new situations requiring new ways of thinking.

Students who complete the high school requirements and successfully complete Cambridge Program will earn a Cambridge Diploma -and-qualifications/cambridge-advanced/cambridge-aice-diploma/.

There are presently two high school Cambridge sites in Polk County for which students may apply. A student's residential address within the school district determines which Cambridge high school the student could be eligible to attend. See below for the proposed listing of schools for the 2023-24 school year.

Students are expected to adhere to all the academic, ethical, and behavioral requirements described in the Student Code of Conduct. Depending on the location of a student's residency, students and families need to be aware of the additional time commitment involved in utilizing district transportation.

A student is eligible for a Florida Academic Scholars award if he or she meets the general eligibility requirements for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program and: Has been awarded an International Baccalaureate Diploma from the International Baccalaureate Office or an Advanced International Certificate of Education Diploma from the University of Cambridge International Examinations Office.

A student is eligible for a Florida Medallion Scholars award if he or she meets the general eligibility requirements for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program and: Has completed the International Baccalaureate curriculum but failed to earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma or has completed the Advanced International Certificate of Education curriculum but failed to earn the Advanced International Certificate of Education Diploma, and has attained at least the score required under f.s. 1009.531(6)(b) on the combined verbal and quantitative parts of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the Scholastic Assessment Test, or the recentered Scholastic Assessment Test of the College Entrance Examination, or an equivalent score on the ACT Assessment Program.

Each AP Exam is awarded a score of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, with 5 indicating that a student is extremely well-qualified to receive college credit and/or advanced placement in a particular sequence of courses. AppState does not accept scores lower than 3 and sometimes gives additional credit for scores of 4 or 5. Review our credit policy if you would like to determine how your AP scores will transfer.

Need AP scores from a prior year on your record for registration purposes OR did not indicate Appalachian at time of testing? No problem! Your AP scores are accessible online through College Board. Just follow these steps:

Note: Scores sent directly by College Board for exams taken in a given May testing session typically arrive at Appalachian in mid-July of that year and will be reflected on records in late July (e.g., App won't have access to your May 2021 AP exam scores until mid-July 2021).

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), founded in 1968, is a recognized leader in the field of international education. It is a non-profit foundation that works with 1,462 schools worldwide to develop and offer three challenging programs to approximately 200,000 students.

IB grade reports are automatically sent in July to you, your participating high school, and the colleges you designated when you took the exam. App State receives these scores via email and posts them to your student records here. If you did not designate Appalachian State University as a score recipient, you can order them on line from the International Baccalaureate Organization at _orders/. The cost is $16 per transcript request.

Your Cambridge AS & A Level scores are accessible through the US Grade Transcript Service. This service will allow you to send AS & A Level grade transcripts to us. Also, your previous school/institution may have your grade transcript available and can send us that information directly to tran...@appstate.edu.

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) gives you the opportunity to earn college credit for what you already know with qualifying scores on one or more CLEP examinations. These exams test your knowledge of introductory college-level subjects.

Appalachian State University provides credit for successful scores on over 20 CLEP exams. The following link lists the exam(s) for which credit is granted, the required score, and the equivalent App State course: CLEP Credit Policy

The College Board's website provides additional information about CLEP exams, including exam descriptions and test preparation resources: www.collegeboard.com/clep. You can also contact your academic advisor to discuss whether CLEP is right for you.

Appalachian accepts a variety of courses which hold an American Council on Education (ACE) recommendation. One source of potential ACE transfer credit is StraighterLine. Review the App State StraighterLine transfer credit policy to see which courses may transfer. Note: Current Appalachian students should fill out a Visiting Coursework request and receive permission to take a StraighterLine course prior to registering for the course.

To submit a transcript from StraighterLine, simply complete a Transcript Request from your StraighterLine account. Should you have any other questions about StraighterLine or other ACE-recommended coursework, please reach out to Transfer Admissions & Engagement.

For students looking for a more challenging high school experience or for a chance to earn college credit, many high schools offer advanced college-level programs. The newest one of these is the Cambridge AICE, an international diploma program created via the University of Cambridge in England.

AICE, which stands for Advanced International Certificate of Education and is pronounced like the word "ace," is a set of challenging college-level classes for high school students. It was developed by Cambridge Assessment, a non-profit, non-teaching department of the University of Cambridge in England.

Like the AP and IB programs, AICE was designed to give students the option to pursue a more rigorous and ambitious curriculum by teaching you key skills to succeed in college-level work. At the same time, AICE classes and the diploma structure are flexible enough to let students tailor the coursework to their specific interests and strengths.

Besides the academic and intellectual appeal of learning in greater depth, AICE lets you earn an advanced diploma to boost your college application. It also has the potential to get you college credit or let you place out of intro courses once you're a freshman.

However, because it is still a newer program, not all colleges view AICE classes in the same way they do AP classes. You can use the Cambridge Assessments lookup tool to check whether your target college accepts AICE.

For students in Florida, an AICE Diploma is a great way to secure some money for college. If you've earned the diploma and completed 100 hours of community service, you will automatically qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars Award via the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program.

But you don't need to earn the AICE diploma to get this scholarship. Some combinations of AICE coursework, community service hours, and minimum scores on the SAT/ACT are also ways to win Florida Bright Futures awards.

The AICE program is made up of one-year classes called AS Levels, and two-year classes called A Levels. AICE classes can be taken individually, or you can take the two-year program and get an AICE diploma. There are some classes that can be started at the AS Level and then extended to the A Level later.

AICE classes put a lot of emphasis on writing, critical thinking, and delving deep into their subjects. AICE classes aren't very rigidly structured, and AICE exams are somewhat modular. This flexibility gives teachers a lot more room to spend extra time investigating what seems to be interesting to students and leaving out or shortening other course sections.

If you decide to just take individual AICE classes, colleges will treat them just as they do individual AP classes. These courses will add rigor to your transcript, count more in your weighted GPA, and show colleges that you are willing to challenge yourself and are a motivated student.
