Gestures are as core a feature of FromSoftware RPGs as Dodge Rolls and the Message System. Where would the Dark Souls community be today if it wasn't for the Praise The Sun emote, after all? Thankfully, Gestures were brought back for Elden Ring alongside a robust new multiplayer system and a simplified way of doing them.
Gestures are typically used in multiplayer, both co-op and PvP, for players to communicate if they aren't using voice chat externally. Gestures in Elden Ring are not only more numerous than in previous FromSoftware games, but they are also easier to get thanks to the abundance of NPCs who hand them out.
Gestures, or emotes, are special animations that last for a few seconds. They can be used almost anytime in the overworld, but most players save the emoting for multiplayer. Players start with a sizable amount of Gestures, more than any previous FromSoftware game, which can be slotted and performed at will. They can even be added to messages, which creates a ghostly version of your character performing that Emote if other players look at your message.
Gestures like the three Pointing emotes can be used to guide other players in a direction (or you can use Point Downwards to disparage a PvP opponent). Emotes like Jump For Joy, Rallying Cry, or Bow are perfect for celebrating a downed boss with friends. There are countless gestures in Elden Ring that can be discovered and unlocked, too, including one tied to pre-order copies of the game only.
To perform a Gesture, open up your player menu by pressing Start. On the right-hand side of the screen, you should see two sections, one for your pouch items, and one for Gestures. By using the D-pad to navigate to this section you will be able to choose one of six Gestures to perform.
Then, press A (or X) to perform the Gesture you've selected. To swap out a Gesture, select it and press Y (or Triangle) to bring up the customization menu. Here you can see a visual list of every Gesture you have unlocked on your character. Once you find the Gesture you want to replace the original with, just press A to choose it and you'll be brought back to the menu.
Elden Ring offers players a variety of gestures that can impact the game in unpredictable ways. These can be found pretty much everywhere and be unlocked in many different ways. Although gestures in Elden Ring mainly serve as a way of communication between players, some can provoke a reaction from NPCs or even unlock secret areas. There are two locations the Elden Ring community has discovered that can be unlocked with a gesture; both of them require the Erudition gesture and are located in Liurnia of the Lakes.
Elden Ring is not the first FromSoftware game that locks content behind gestures. Indeed, Dark Souls 3 took this concept much further than Elden Ring by hiding a whole secret area behind the Path of the Dragon gesture. This region was called Archdragon Peak, and in it, players could find multiple items, unique weapons, and even bosses they would never otherwise see without knowing how to access this secret area.
Gestures in Elden Ring can be performed by opening the menu, navigating to the slots on the bottom right side, and using the action button to select one. Players can only have up to six chosen at a time but can switch them by any they have acquired by following the proper prompt buttons shown at the bottom of the screen. For those playing on the PlayStation, gestures can be associated with a directional movement of the controller. To use it during the game, players must simply hold Triangle and perform the movement associated with the gesture they wish to use.
An example of a gesture being used to interact with an NPC can be found during Blaidd's questline. In the Mistwood, located in eastern Limgrave, players will be able to find Blaidd for the first time by following the wolf howls to the Mistwood Ruins . At first, he will be very high up atop the ruins and cannot be interacted with until players visit merchant Kale, one of Elden Ring's traveling merchants, in the Church of Elleh to learn the Finger Snap gesture. After that, players can approach Blaidd and perform that gesture, and he will jump down from the ruins to talk to the player.
Another place where a gesture can be used to unlock a secret in Elden Ring can be seen with Patches (Boss) , who can be found for the first time in Murkwater Cave, near the Murkwater River. Inside the cave, players will eventually meet FromSoftware's recurring character Patches as a boss fight. After he loses about 75% of his HP, Patches will surrender, and if players stop attacking him, they will receive the Grovel for Mercy gesture.
If players attack Patches again after befriending him, he will tell players to surrender when they get low on health, after which players can use the Grovel for Mercy gesture in Elden Ring to make him stop attacking. Doing this will reward players with the Extreme Repentance gesture.
The two places where players can use gestures in Elden Ring to unlock new areas are the Converted Tower and the Converted Fringe Tower in Liurnia of the Lakes . The Converted Tower is located in the southwest region of the map. It will simply require players to use the Erudition gesture in front of the statue in the middle of the tower to spawn a magical ladder that leads to one of Elden Ring's Memory Stones. To unlock the Erudition gesture, players will need to give Thops, found at the Church of Irith, the second Glintstone Key that players will find in the Raya Lucaria Academy.
Looking to discover more of Elden Ring's gesture secrets but missed finding the Glintstone Key in the Academy of Raya Lucaria? Watch the video from RetroGAMEz below to see the second Glintstone Key's location in action!
While in Raya Lucaria Academy , players should take the time to make sure they also collect one of Elden Ring's Glintstone crowns, which is necessary for the final gesture secret in Elden Ring. There are multiple types of Glintstone Crowns, but players can find the first easily once they are near the Schoolhouse Classroom Site of Grace.
From this Site of Grace, players must turn left in the hallway and hit the empty bookcase on the other side of the room to find one of Elden Ring's Illusory Walls. After that, jump left at the balcony and climb the rocks at the end of the path to find the Olivinus Glintstone Crown.
The second location where the Erudition gesture in Elden Ring hides a secret is the Fringe Converted Tower, which can be found in the northeastern region of Liurnia of the Lakes. This tower has a magically locked door which requires players to perform the Erudition gesture while wearing one of the many Glintstone Crowns to be unlocked. Once this is done, climbing the Converted Fringe Tower will reward players with the Cannon of Haima and the Gavel of Haima sorceries.
Gestures are used not only to communicate with players online, but also with some NPCs. Some players even use them to dodge certain enemy attacks. Moreover, in very rare cases, gestures can be used to activate special events in the game. For this reason, pay attention to what the NPCs are saying, or at least what the statues are trying to show you. If you recognize a pose, it's a good idea to use the same gesture.
Gestures can be activated in two different ways. The first way is to open the game's main menu with the corresponding button (Options button on PS5 controller). Then, on the right side, you'll find the gesture selection menu. From there, you can select the gesture that you want to activate, or switch out a gesture you don't want for another.
The second method is similar to the first. When you enter the menu, you will see the corresponding controller motion. Under each gesture slot, the motion of the controller is different. This allows you to use a given gesture without entering the menu. To perform a gesture without entering the menu, hold down the interaction/picking up items button (Triangle on PS5) and then make the appropriate motion with the controller.
Gestures are a game mechanic that allows players to express emotion or direction. There are a total of thirty-three gestures in Dark Souls 3. Collection of all gestures rewards the player with the Master of Expression trophy.
Most gestures performed towards the Fire Keeper will result in different reactions from her, such as 'Dignified bow' responding with a bow, 'Legion Etiquette' with a look of consternation, 'Stretch out' with a small laugh, or 'Path of the Dragon' with a twirl. The only gestures not reacted to are the 3 different point gestures (requires confirmation).
Received from Cornyx of the Great Swamp. Talk to him in the Undead Settlement and accept his services. Then talk to him in Firelink Shrine, leave the conversation, and talk to him again to receive this gesture.
Received from Knight Slayer Tsorig upon killing him or being killed by him, either as an invader in the Catacombs of Carthus or as an NPC in Smouldering Lake near the lake of fire with the bridge leading to a ladder to the ballista above it.
Giving a Pale Tongue to Rosaria, Mother of Rebirth will cause Sirris of the Sunless Realms' questline to fail and you will not be able to receive the Silvercat Ring, Sunset Armor Set, Sunset Shield, Sunless Talisman, Dragonslayer's Axe, or the Mirrah Chain Set (and Darkmoon Loyalty, if you didn't get it before) until the next NG cycle. However, she can be killed in Firelink Shrine to receive the Sunless Set and Sunless Talisman from the Shrine Handmaid if her quest has failed.
There is a cap of 99 Pale Tongues you can offer. If you reach this limit, you can't offer more, and, consequently, you can't gain this gesture anymore. Pale Tongues used for respecs don't count toward the 99 limit.
Received upon summoning the Londor Pale Shade once you have five Dark Sigils. Can be summoned near the Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire for the Abyss Watchers fight, or outside the fog gate for the Pontiff Sulyvahn fight if you are following the Lord of Hollows questline. Note that while the Londor Pale Shade can be summoned for the Soul of Cinder fight, doing this will not grant you the gesture.
