There's something about the crisp fall air that makes you want to bundle up and stay in. But this season, we're doing the opposite. Rather than hunkering down, the Fedora community has been getting out and connecting: traveling to conferences, digging into working groups, and chasing new opportunities to learn and collaborate. This newsletter has all the details, so read on to see where we've been and where we're headed next!

Virtual Fedora Showcase

The Virtual Fedora Showcase is coming back this fall! For the 4th year in a row, this event has grown in scope and size, and this year is shaping up to be no different. Virtual Fedora Showcase is a free, three-day event that brings the global Fedora community together to share program updates, discuss upcoming work, and connect with peers tackling similar challenges. Call for Proposals Now Open

We are now accepting presentation proposals for this year's Showcase. Whether it's a unique implementation, a migration story, a lesson learned, or an update on what your institution is working on, your experience is valuable to the community — even if it feels routine to you!

Fedora Governance Elections

Fedora Community governance is overseen by the Fedora Governance Group, which is responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and managing the overall direction of the program. Voting is almost closed to elect the incoming Fedora Governance Group, and this year every available category received more nominations than positions available. A strong showing of how community engagement continues to expand and grow.

The Fedora Governance Group is made up of elected representatives from our member institutions and the broader community, working together to guide Fedora's priorities and strategic direction. Seats are typically held by institutional representatives who contribute to the Fedora Membership program. However, two seats are reserved for community representatives to ensure the voices of our entire user base are represented in governance decisions. This is just one way that the Fedora Program is intentionally making space for all voices within our community.

Stay tuned for the election results in an upcoming newsletter and to meet your new Fedora Governance Group.

Fedora Camp Recap

Fedora Camp 2026 wrapped this month at the University of Vienna, bringing together attendees from 11 countries across five regions for three days of shared learning and collaboration, including user implementation stories, hands-on workshops and community updates.

Gathering in person has never been more important. It gives us a direct connection to our user base, and provides space to work through questions immediately relevant to user’s institutions. It also serves to strengthen the connections that carry Fedora forward between events. Thank you to all who contributed, and were able to attend!

Thank you to our host, the University of Vienna. And to our sponsors — Lyrasis, PHAIDRA, and Cerabyte. Your contributions made this year's event possible.

Fedora in the Community

Fedora, IOI & Lyrasis at Educause

Join Fedora Program Manager, Arran Griffith, and Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI)’s Lauren Collister, at Educause this year from September 29 - October 2, 2026 in Denver, CO. Arran and Lauren will be presenting a poster called Bots Behaving Badly: The implications of bot traffic on research and knowledge in the AI economy.

Through this poster, Arran is contributing by sharing her experiences leading the AI Discussions Working Group. The poster gives voice to the issues the WG is facing, and explores how aggressive bot traffic is impacting GLAM-sector technologists working tirelessly to keep systems online. If you are planning to attend Educase, come find Arran or Lauren to share your thoughts.

Long-term Access, Storage & Technology Working Group

As part of our cross-community engagement efforts, Fedora has been involved in the iLong-term Access, Storage & Technology (LAST) Community. As a founding member, we are excited to share that the group was recently granted provisional community status by SNIA, the leading industry body for storage networking standards. LAST brings together stakeholders from the storage, preservation, and IT ecosystems to develop a layered architectural framework addressing not just whether digital content survives, but whether it can actually be read and understood centuries from now.

Founding members include CERN, Western Digital, Cerabyte, and Lyrasis, and Fedora's own Arran Griffith serves as Co-chair. These conversations will shape preservation infrastructure for decades, and Fedora is helping lead them.

Fedora Membership - New Look. New Benefits

You may not have seen it, but earlier this year the Fedora Program team launched a new look and feel to the Fedora Membership program. As we think toward Fedora’s future, and how to best serve and reward our members we wanted to give the program a little upgrade.

Highlights include:

  • Discounted registrations for Fedora-hosted events & training…like Fedora Camp!
  • Invitation to the new Annual General Assembly - a virtual event for Members only to gather and discuss topics directly relevant to users and investors.
  • Early access to the Program Annual Report - a snapshot view of program health, priorities and on-going initiatives.

Fedora membership is an investment in shared infrastructure and the community that keeps it strong. Your institution’s contribution supports the ongoing maintenance, security, and development of one of the most trusted open source digital preservation platforms in the world.
