Hello Fedora Community!

Today we are here to share some very exciting news with everyone - the Fedora 6 Alpha Release is ready and available for download and testing. This marks a significant milestone for the community and brings us that much closer to a production release aimed at early 2021.

One of the goals of Fedora 6 is to retain compliance with the feature set found in Fedora 5.1, which includes continued compliance with the Fedora API specification. We have also successfully completed the following:

  • Oxford Common File Layout persistence

  • Search Service

  • Alpha release of migration tooling that provides upgrades from Fedora 3, 4 and 5 to Fedora 6.

You can download the Fedora 6.0 Alpha and migration tooling here:

  1. Fedora 6.0 Alpha

  2. Fedora 3 to 6 migration-utils

  3. Fedora 4 & 5 to 6 upgrade-utils

To assist you in using these tools, we have provided detailed instructions on how to walk the various upgrade paths.

To make testing easier you may want to try the updated Docker deployment option: fcrepo-docker.

With this Alpha release, we want to ensure that the broader community has ample opportunity to confirm the functionality of the software against local needs and use cases and provide feedback as we look toward a Beta release. We cannot emphasize enough how valuable your feedback is to us.   It is the lonestar guiding our choices about where to focus the development effort so that we can deliver the greatest benefit to the community.

Please use the fedora-tech mailing list or the #fedora-6-testing channel in the Fedora Slack to provide any and all feedback on this release - just letting us know that you are testing the software would be greatly appreciated.

We also want to send a HUGE thank you out to all of those who participated in the sprints thus far. Without your involvement, we would not have been able to accomplish this goal.
