I've had a few people ask about using FED3 without a nosepiece, where FED3
would spit the pellet into the cage or other apparatus without trapping
the pellet in the well. In the past I've recommended simply taking the nosepiece off for this situation (I also recommend removing it for
testing new FEDs
that you build). The beam break sensor is fast enough to detect a
pellet dropping through the well. However, without the nosepiece the FED3 can
experience false negatives if the pellet bounces
around and doesn't pass directly through the beam-break to get counted.
I
recently designed a new nosepiece that has a hole in it for the pellet
to drop through. I've tested it on a few thousand pellets and it seems reliable so I wanted to share it here. If anyone is using FED3 without a nosepiece you may want to print this one instead of just removing the nosepiece (.STL attached):
