Hi Everyone-
Does anyone have any advice for getting the inserts into the dispensing disc at the right angle/orientation.  I've printed out parts for a few FED3's and was starting to try to assemble them, but am having issues getting the inserts into the discs at the right angle.  I've tried both the brass inserts with a soldering iron (using just the normal tip) as well as the new threaded ones that Lex mentioned that screw it with a screwdriver.  For both, I've had a hard time getting them in at the right angle and especially with the brass ones, getting them in without melting the PLA on the inside of the insert as I try to put it in.  I've posted a few pictures of the relatively successful ones I've done, which are still not perfect.  (sorry, the pics aren't very good)
So I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks or advice.  It may just take some more practice, but I thought someone here might have some helpful tricks.
Thanks.

Hi Aaron,

I found that the angle of the newest disk to work the best in our hands (the august version in the beta folder on GitHub). Also, someone previously posted about  these self tapping insert nuts , which have a nice slot in which for a flat head screwdriver that will enable you to more easily thread it at a consistent angle. On another note, someone also commented that the newest wheel seems to get stuck and prevents the motor from turning; we find this to be true as well, however it can be easily fixed by sanding and manually turning the wheel in the FED until you feel that wheel turns smoothly.

In my opinion the angle of the previous versions of the disc make it so that you have to screw in the set screw so far that it sticks out a bit and tilts the disk just enough to increase the chance that you will get jams because pellets will begin to accumulate underneath the disk.

Hope this info helps.

Hi Aaron,
The special soldering iron tips make it a lot easier to insert these, I think they are worth buying.  Something like this, depending on your soldering iron these may fit:

I agree with Victor I'll try to record a video of how I do it when I get a chance!  -Lex

Hi again - I didn't have time to make a new video but I found this old video of how the special soldering tip makes this easier!

Hi all,

I found this thread while troubleshooting this issue and wanted to follow up with tips that worked for me in case it's helpful to anyone.

1) the special soldering tips were a must for avoiding melted plastic mess that blocks the inside of the brass insert
2) immediately after inserting, I grab a hemostat to pull out the plastic "plug" behind the brass insert and it comes out cleanly
3) using forceps to set the brass insert on the soldering iron tip is recommended to avoid accidental burns

Cheers,
Kristen
