REAL LIFE NEWS: SHARKS LOVE ALL THAT JAZZ

by Hazed

Sharks can recognise jazz music. Researchers in Australia found they
could train sharks to swim to where jazz was playing and receive food.

The tests came out of the observation that sharks have learned to
associate the sound of a boat’s engine with food, since operators of
tourist boats often throw food overboard to attract sharks.

The sharks who were trained to recognise jazz were then played classical
music – and this confused them. They couldn’t differentiate between jazz
and classical, so didn’t understand that they had to go to a different
location.

Still, the tests show that sharks are not just dumb animals.

DRONES OF THE WEEK: WORLD RECORD

by Hazed

A failed display of dancing droids has broken the world record for the
most drones flown simultaneously.

EHang’s flight of 1,374 was commissioned for a Labour Day performance in
China, and the company was paid 10.5 million yuan (£1.21m). The drones
were programmed to fly in set patterns, but failed to spell out the date
as planned.

The South China Morning Post said the event was an “epic fail.”

Despite this, the fact that so many drones were flying all at once meant
it broke the Guinness World Record, previously held by Intel for its
flight at the 2 018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in February.

TOY CAR OF THE WEEK: CAMERA-READY HOT WHEELS

by Hazed

The makers of Hot Wheels cars understands that sometimes you want to see
the action as if you were in the driver’s seat yourself. So they’ve
joined with GoPro to create a new camera-compatible Hot Wheels car.

Hot Wheels fans have been unofficially modifying their cars so that the
miniature cube-shaped camera released a few years ago could be fitted to
the cars, and now manufacturer Mattel has made it official by releasing
the new Zoom In toy.

ON THE WEB: FINDING ANSWERS TO THE MYSTERIES OF VENUS

by Hazed

We’ve visited the moon. We’ve sent numerous landers and rovers to Mars.
But we don’t know much at all about Venus, so there are plans to send
missions there to check it out.

In many ways, Venus is Earth’s twin – it’s a similar size, composition
and distance from the sun. But something went wrong and the planet ended
up baking hot and inhospitable.

Landing on the planet is a challenge, with surface temperatures hot
enough to melt lead at 872 °F (467 °C), and an atmosphere full of sulfur
dioxide. Previous probes haven’t lasted long after touching down – the
record holder being Soviet probe Venera 13 in 1982, which lasted 127
minutes.

This article discusses the problemss and how they might be overcome.
