Recently Steam released Steam Play, which uses their fork of Wine hosted by Steam called Proton (GitHub) to allow us to play our complete games library under Linux. It creates wineprefixes for all of your games that don't already have a Linux port and works a far cry better than wine.
I'm trying to run Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance (Steam App ID: 9420) and play it on its unofficial multiplayer client, FAF. The game used to work with Wine, but now has a number of issues (for example, fullscreen doesn't work and high tendency to blackscreen in windowed). But it does work with Proton.
My intent isn't to circumvent Steam DRM, which running the games via terminal likely wouldn't accomplish anyways, but to run it with dynamic arguments. This will allow setting up multiplayer matches. This will be applied to other games in the future.
Age of Empires 2 HD fails, but with a much more verbose error message window stating steam must be running, but I had Steam running at the time (and it would run if I clicked the play button in Steam).
Where $STEAM has backslashes instead of slashes, as it's a Windows path. In addition, it set something like 70 environment variables (related to Wine, Steam, various hardware/drivers, libraries, etc.). A single variable, WINESERVERSOCKET referred to the wine server started for this instance. If I omitted this variable and used all the rest, I could start the game from the command line.
I decided last night to go back and play some of my older games again, so I installed DoW2 and tried to run it.
I got an error message "Fatal Error - Steam must be running to play this game" even though I had launched it from steam.
I've spent most of last night and all this morning searching for a fix, and have done the following:
Checked File integrity
Re-installed 3 times
Run as admin
Changed compatibility (98/me/XP/7/8)
Screamed at my kids to shut the hell up and leave me alone
Searched for a non existent file (Steam doesn't use it anymore apparently)
Re-installed Games for windows Live (even though it doesn't work in Windows 10)
Installed older version of DX
Called the UK (There is no Sega/Relic support in AU) and was told to email the problem (No response so far).
Installed Chaos Rising
Apologised to my kids
Scoured the net trying to find a fix
Logged onto 4 different forums and TLS servers to get some help.
Watched about 14 different youtube videos on how to fix it, followed the steps and nothing
So far nothing has worked - Has anyone else had this issue and if so - How did you fix it?
Another advice (which I believe could help) would be stop all non-crucial processes that windows need to work and only run steam + the game. So any app like fraps or temperature monitoring tools would go just in case.
Edit: How about moving the game directory to another partition? IF you already have more than one steam folder you will have the option to move the game files to another place on the game optios of Local Files
All the other games ran fine DoW1, Space Marine etc. After reinstalling it still wouldn't work, however Chaos Rising actually started - but no movies (Just sound and the subtitles) and no planet map - I'm 1/2 way there it seems lol.
Steam's executable or the game's own executable? You'll want to make sure both are configured for it (you can toggle the setting by right clicking on the exe's icon, going into properties, and going into the compatibility tab), when testing that element.
Check that the game doesn't need specific .dll files. Those don't necessarily get installed with older versions of DX, and even when they are, they may not be properly utilized by the game unless you drop them in the game's root folder.
Well, once you get past the last-ditch option of reinstalling Steam itself, there may not be much to do but wait and hope for a fix to pop up- I've had this issue with a few games on Win 10, and have had to wait for Steam or developer updates to resolve the incompatibility.
That said, googling the issue you mention, several users mention having to load the graphics config for the game before it'll properly load [after fresh install]. [Purportedly this can be directly accessed via GraphicsConfig.exe from the game folder.]
Renaming AuxInstaller.exe to AuxInstaller.exe.old helps to fix a launch issue with DoW2 where the hang simply hangs/crashes on load without error. It doesn't seem related, but it can't hurt to try. I've got nothing else that comes to mind. :/
However, to play the multiplayer weekend and preview patch 0.9, Steam is currently required. You can launch the game with the direct Last Epoch executable in the steamapps/common folder, but Steam must be running in the background to successfully connect to the mp servers.
This seems to apply for the Dev version, I had the same issue and rolled back to stable and it went away. (Steam didn't need to be running to start the server).

I have a similar problem and was wondering how exactly you got yours running. I finally got a dev branch version installed with SteamCMD and it works, however i now have the problem that i get Steam authentication failed when i try to connect to it. Did you install your server with Steam or SteamCMD?
Sorry i never replied to this. I will do so now however since i just encountered the same problem again. The problem is related to steam updating, it basically updates and thinks its up to date but then there are a couple of files that are not updated or currupt. I always delete the game .exe file and then force steam to verify the integrity of the game. It then redownloads the .exe and figures out that there are other files not correct which it then fixes.
open sandboxie > make a new sandbox> name it steam or something obvious > right click on its icon > settings > click + on Resource Access > File Access > Direct Access > Add Program > "Open / Select File" > (find steam , probably located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe) > select it in the filebrowser (click open) > hit ok a few times > right click on the sandboxie icon you made > "Run Sandboxed" > "Run Any Program" > find steam again and launch it
2.5) i did have an unmentioned problem where the sandboxie steam had like a black screen for everything, but that is fixed by going to program files > sandboxie and changing all of the .exe's in there to be ran as administrator (properties>compatibility>check the box "run this program as an administrator"). after that, you have to find the .exe of every game you wanna play and do the same to that.

New World unrecoverable error no product information found or steam must be running is a common issue when playing this game. If you encounter such an error in Windows 11/10, how can you remove it from your PC? MiniTool gives some efficient ways in this post to help you out.

Hi!
Is it possible to play the game through Steam laucnh, have Steam Overlay and take screenshots? Because my game only launches with EA launch and I want to have progress on my Steam version which i bought there (achievements, time in game) but it's always launch in EA app.
I just tried to completely reinstall the game and the EA app, delete temp files, but still when I start the game, after 1 second it switches from Steam to EA.
It's strange that this is happening, because I just want to play this game through Steam or at least have a choice to play in EA app or Steam.
Is it any way to solve this issue? I will be very grateful!
I tried to find an answer on the Steam forums, but unfortunately it didn't work, so I hope that maybe I can find an answer here why it's laucnh Steam versjon in EA app
I really like this game and would really like to play it through Steam to get the achievements, have a collection of beautiful screenshots, etc.
Game requires EA app to play, and I think even steam says this. What this means is steam will launch the EA app and then the game to play it. Different games and launch apps do this with steam, another example is Rockstar game such as Red Dead Redemption 2. So No, there is no way to get steam to ignore the EA app and launch the game without it.
Thanks for answer!
I'm okay with EA app and i understand that it's required for activation, but it's just a bit strange and definitely some kind of error that the game is launch and play MSA Steam version on EA app.
I have MS game collection in Steam and EA app and it's only MSA Steam version which, after launching in Steam, redirects me to EA app and the game works only through EA app, not through Steam. (only 1 sec and than it's redirects to EA app)
I don't have problem with EA app because i use it as well, but it's just sad that i cannot play MSA which i bought on Steam and really like it, and can't get achievements there, make screenshots or make any progress.
I've tried diferent solution for a similar problem which i have found here at Answers HQ, but I didn't find the right answer, or maybe I'm missing something.
I have tried to reainstall all and used Revo Uninstaller etc, but maybe i missing some step
Therefore, I need your help/guidelines and I believe that we can find a solution
