I took the CAPM Exam on May 22, 2020 and though I hardly remember it feeling easy, I do know that I felt prepared but at the end I had NO CLUE if I had passed. I just couldn't tell. I know that I finished well before the time ran out for me, and I had a very above average score for my CAPM. This test was not easy to take and preparing for it was not quick either, and I want to tell you about my time preparing to pass the CAPM exam.
I began studying for the exam at least 6 months before I took it, but 3 months is probably all that you will need to do it. Averaging 90 minutes a day for 90 days is enough time to study. I found that making myself aware of a test date was the key to focusing on studying. About 3 months into the 6 month preparation period, I decided when I was going to take it, and having that deadline in mind motivated me to keep studying. At the point when I was running out of steam, I would think about the deadline and my energy would pick up.
The first documents that I studied to prepare for this exam were Flashcards. I had a pack of about 50 cards to study and I was going to use that along with a very resourceful subscription, that I will talk about later, to learn this brand new material. The Flashcards were not as useful as I found the PMI website to be, so I ended up just returning the Flashcards (purchased through Amazon) and I joined the PMI Institute through their website. Along with membership to PMI, comes a study guide for the CAPM exam. It's called PMBOK Guide and it is their official guide on how to carry out project management. PMI is a global institute so the PMBOK Guide is sort of the leading resource for all things project management. You can study the PMBOK Guide and read about processes represented on the CAPM, other Project Management exams, and a few more tips on how to pass. The PMBOK Guide was great, but what I found to be even more resourceful was an app called PocketPrep.
PocketPrep, for around $40, offers practice exams that really prepare you for the real CAPM. When I tested for the Microsoft Certification in 2017, I really learned then that practice exams were the way to go to really know what to expect. It is helpful when you have read the textbook (it makes you feel like a pro) but taking it a step further and doing practice exams is the way to really ensure that you know the material that you are going to be tested on. The Project Prep app offers many diverse options for testing. You can take the practice questions in 10 questions at a time for a daily brain jolt, or you can do full practice exams. You can take subject matter exams or you can take a full out exam that covers all of the topics in the PMBOK Guide. I found that the questions on the PocketPrep exams were very similar to the format in the actual exam. PocketPrep also offers a money back guarantee if you do not pass the exam with their materials. PocketPrep was a lot more affordable than one other prep tool I used: a subscription to Brainbok.
Costing $139.00 for 3 months of access, I found Brainbok to be least effective than PocketPrep, but the usefulness of it gave me my monies worth. This website, Brainbok, offers a database, Flashcards, practice exams and quizzes. The exams were a lot more challenging than PocketPrep's and I really think that if the real exam questions were as hard Brainbok's practice questions, I probably would not have passed. I learned to appreciate the difficulty of those questions, because they prompted me pay closer attention when I studied, and that helped me retain more information. I found that I became more serious about what I recalled while studying, after a few sessions with Brainbok because of the technical format of the website. I liked that Brainbok's database was very complete, that the format of the website was very technical, and even though there was no pass guarantee from Brainbok, studying all of their material would make even the most unenthusiastic testing candidate ready and prepared for the exam.
I took the CAPM on March 22, 2020 and I aced 11 out of the 13 sections. In total I scored Above Average in 7 sections, Average Score in 4 sections and Below Average in 2. I would advise anyone who is preparing for the exam to study as much or more than I did, because it is not an easy test. If you don't have any prior knowledge of Project Management, reading materials (other than the PMBOK Guide) and watching online video courses are also a recommended practice. The exam, although difficult, is not impossible and even though I can't remember just how afraid I was when I sat down to take the exam, I do know that it was fun to take because I felt really prepared.
The Certified Associate in Project Management, or CAPM, is an entry-level certificate from the Project Management Institute (PMI). Depending on your background in project management, this certification might only require some studying, but the usual candidate studies for about 1-2 months.
I managed to pass this exam with just 2 weeks of intense preparation, after completing a project management course in the fall semester of my Masters in International Business at Hult International Business School.
Thus, I wanted to share my preparation plan, which allowed me to pass "Above Target" in every part of the exam. Though this plan is based around having taken a project management course before preparation, one could easily apply this guide by taking the 23 hours of project management education through an online course.
The idea of cramming your intense preparation into 2 weeks relies on the principle of Parkinson's law (ironically also covered in the content for the exam). Considering that "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion", limiting time allows for greater efficiency and eliminates time wasted. So be ware, you will feel rushed, but you will save a lot of time.
The 23 hours of formal project management education, especially if it doesn't follow the PMBOK Guide (Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge) by the letter, will lead to some knowledge gaps. This is often the case if you take the formal education as part of a university course. Either review the PMBOK Guide or complete some practice exams, such as the ones in Rita's CAPM Exam Prep Guide (which I recommend), to identify the chapters you have the biggest knowledge gaps on. Those are the ones you will want to review in great detail.
The PMI PMBOK revolves around 49 distinct processes which you will have to understand well and know. Review every chapter, especially the ones you are weak on, using a review guide. I used Rita's CAPM Exam Prep Guide in combination with the Joseph Phillips CAPM Cram Exam Prep Course on Udemy, to make detailed notes and cue cards. You will need to cover at least one chapter a day, if not 1.5 per day, to give yourself some time to do practice exams.
Through tackling this exam in about 2 weeks you will cover a lot of material in very little time. In order to not forget any of the material and re-enforce the material you covered, one needs to continuously repeat the learned content. I used the CAPM Pocket Prep App to continuously re-enforce the material I studied.
The format of the PMBOK, especially the 49 processes and their ITTOs (Input, Tools & Techniques, Outputs) seem to lend itself to memorization, especially as some are very similar and difficult to differentiate. DON'T DO THIS. Understanding the processes will allow you to better answer the questions on the exam.
Yes, the CAPM Exam is 3 hours and 150 multiple choice questions. I hate these kind of exams too, so if you are anything like me - mock testing is the go to. There are many sites, books and other offerings out there that allow you to do full exams. I can highly recommend the PrepCast CAPM Exam simulator. The ability to complete entire exams as practice beforehand, helps you identify critical areas to review again, but also gets you used to answering a long multiple choice test online.
This study plan is extremely intense. Take a day before the exam to calm down and rest. If you followed this study plan, you are likely to pass the exam, but give yourself a rest before the exam to relax. Sleep plenty before the day of the exam and don't over study the hours before sitting the exam.
Taking a quality CAPM certification training course is more than just sitting in a room with an instructor. Perhaps the most impactful study aid, our Strategy Guide has proven incredibly useful because it outlines several critical areas: formulating a good study plan, what to expect on exam day, understanding the 25 most common confusions students encounter and identifying the 10 most common types of testing tricks on the CAPM exam. Many students read it at least twice; once after class and again when they think they are fully prepared to sit for the exam.
