Hello,

I am new for using FDS recently and wondering about how we decide the fire size for a new built building.

SFPE handbook mentioned about fire load density (MJ/m2) depend on the building types. Also with useful data of the real HRR from burned things by experiments.

BS code mentioned about kW/m2 recommendation for types of building.

My question is, do we have a guide that shows fire size in a building (kW)? especially for a theatre and multi-function hall.

Selecting design fires is the responsibility of the user. The fire size will depend on the specific hazards posed by the structure, the purpose of the analysis, and other factors. There is not a one-size-fits-all answer. This should also be done in accordance with local codes and standards.

The UNI EN 1991-1-2 standard at schedule E.5 "fire growth rate and RHRf for different uses" indicates for cinema theater a fast fire growth rate (1,000 kw @ 150 s) and RHRf of 500 kW/m^2.

These values can be appropriately lowered in the presence of furnishings and materials certified for reaction to fire.

How long should your project fire be?

For example, if it is 10 minutes long, you will have a peak HRR of 16 MW. Considering the maximum heat release rate per unit area you have a fire area of 32 sq. m.

Is there any direct relation between fire load density and HRR? Let's say we know the fire load density from the given scenario, can we determine how much should be our HRR?

There is no direct relation between MJ/m2 and HRR.  Would 1 MJ/m2 of gasoline give you the same HRR as 1 MJ/m2 of wood?  Would 1 MJ/m2 of wood in the form of a tightly packed stack of 50x220 mm floor joists give the same HRR as a 1 MJ/m2 of wood cut into 50 mm x 50 mm sticks and arranged into wood cribs?

It gives a clear direction. Thanks
