Dear friends,

I want to know what fuel I can use to simulate an electric vehicle fire.
I know the toxic gases produced of the electric vehicle fire. Can I determine the fuel based on the combination and percentage of toxic gases produced?

Regards,
Baran

Hi,

Some engineering judgement + literature + assumptions. I suggest you read the literature suggested above if you haven't done so already.

To your question:

From P. Sun, R. Bisschop, H. Niu, X. Huang (2020) A Review of Battery Fires in Electric Vehicles, Fire Technology, 56 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10694-019-00944-3, it states that burning of EV is similar to fossil powered vehicles, so you can assume a similar fuel.

From Márton, T., Dederichs, A. and Giuliani, L., 2015. Modelling of fire in an open car park. Applications of Structural Fire Engineering, they used rubber to model the fire, you can also use that assumption.

So there's no correct answer and you have to make justifiable assumptions.

You might also want to look at this Ghiji, M., Edmonds, S. and Moinuddin, K., 2021. A review of experimental and numerical studies of lithium ion battery fires. Applied Sciences, 11(3), p.1247.

Hi !

Warehouse dimension 60m(w)x100m(L)x 5m(H)
Sprinkler 68oC
Anyone help me to find sprinkler controlled fire size for warehouse  by hand calculation

Smoke Detector , 58oC
in addition, how to determine the activation  time of smoke detector by hand calculation

Thanks

Hi Eve,
See this for an analytical method of sprinkler activation: https://jabirjamal.com/2021/09/introducing-sprinkler-activation-time-calculator/
You can use CFAST for numerical calculation for sprinkler activation.

As for smoke detector activation, see the CFAST technical guide chapter 6.3. There is a referenced study and it is argued about the correlation with temperature difference.
