I've written a utility to convert 3DSOLID objects in AutoCAD to &OBST
for FDS 5. People using AutoCAD 3DSOLID modelling can now use this
free utility to easily and very quickly convert the model geometry to
&OBST lines.

I've uploaded 2 files to the Files section, i.e. 3dsolid2fds.fas and
simple3dmodel.dwg.

In AutoCAD, goto Tools, Load Application and select 3dsolid2fds.fas
and hit Load. Once loaded, in the Command Line type 3dsolid2fds, then
type ALL or select the objects you wish to convert. You will be
prompted for a location to save the output file.

The utility would identify the layer of your 3dsolid objects by name,
e.g wall, door, furniture, etc. and would use the layer name as
SURF_ID on each &OBST line.

Thanks -- but the Files section is not permanent. It is only a
temporary repository.

Bryan -- could you add this listing to the "3rd Party" page.

Johannes, thank you for your generous contribution.
To make your work more accessible, I would like to add a link to the
'Third Party Tools' page of the FDS-SMV website.

The best way for you to contribute this to the community, would be to
create a single web page for it. The page should contain information
about the tool, a link to a .zip file and your contact information.
The zip file should contain the components of the plug-in and a
README.txt file on how to use it.

I will then make a link to your page, from the third party tools page.
This way you can update the information on the page and the zip file
contents whenever you feel it is necessary and you will not need to
rely on us to host and maintain this for you.

Since you have a Google Account, you have access to 'Google Page
Creator', this is a free website hosting service that you can use to
create the page. It is very easy to use and should make this process
fairly painless.
See:
http://pages.google.com
and
http://pages.google.com/-/about.html

If you need any help using the Page Creator, please let me know.

Again, thank you for this contribution, and please send me the URL for
your page when you have it ready.

Best Regards,
Bryan

Johannes,

I think this will help a lot of people. We've been trying (with
limited success) to come up with crazy ways to decompose 3DSOLID
entities into other entities that are easier to deal with but not
quite as descriptive (e.g. 3DFACE) for a long time. I think this
solution is far better. Thanks!

I find 3dsolid models are relatively easy and quick to construct and
well suited for FDS application. For those who don't own tools such as
Pyrosim, I wonder how they construct their FDS models these days.

I have a little confusion about using REAC, HRRPUA and visibility...

In my scenario i have already defined energy of the fire:

&SURF ID='fireplace' HRRPUA=1750.0 COLOR='RED', RAMP_Q='fire_ramp'/
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=0.0 F=0.001 /
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=40.0 F=0.01 /
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=60.0 F=0.02 /
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=120.0 F=0.5 /
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=130.0 F=0.52 /
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=220.0 F=1 /
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=660.0 F=1 /
&RAMP ID='fire_ramp' T=725.0 F=0 /

&OBST XB=21,23,6,8,0,1 SURF_IDS='fireplace','INERT','INERT' /

so fire grows up to 7MW between 220 and 660 seconds of the scenario

i have to obtain visibility quontity so fds ask me to provide REAC line...

&SLCF PBX=22,QUANTITY='visibility'/

In this scenario will be burned some clothes in the closed (cotton and
wood). What i have to type into fds? only the reaction?

ie &REAC ID = 'PROPANE' SOOT_YIELD = 0.01 C = 3. H = 8.
HEAT_OF_COMBUSTION = 46460. IDEAL = .TRUE. /

or also material properties?

You have posted a message to an existing discussion.

In any case, it seems you do not understand the difference between gas
phase combustion (REAC) and solid phase pyrolysis (MATL). You need to
read the User's Guide more carefully. This is of fundamental
importance if you want to use FDS.

As suggested, I've created a web page for this with a download link
and some notes on the use of the utility. I'm sure it will appear on
the "Third Party Tools" page on this site next time the page gets
updated, along with the updated version of DXF2FDS hopefully.

This is an excellent addon and Im sure that it will get widely used. I
have a couple of suggestions based on previous experience with these
type of applications. Alot of models use some soft of uniform grid.
Now with the latest release of version 5, and multiple meshes, grids
now have to effectively line up at the domain interface.

Most of the output that I see from these type of applications have
coordinates that are 4 or 5 dp long, which is unnecessary. Also, a lot
of the obstructions do not snap to the grid when imported into the fds
model. The result when you do your setup run in smokeview, or you
import into a pre-processor like pyrosim, is a multitude of gaps in
solid obstructions if your trying to create a closed environment for a
roof or a room. For simplistic models this is easy to debug and find
the errors, but when you start creating large models with domed roofs,
or curved walls, or other compelx geometry, it becomes very complex
and time consuming.

If there was a function that allowed you to input some global grid
dimensions (dx,dy,dz) so at least the obstructions would attempt to
snap to the grids once you import into the model it would be
beneficial.

Great work!

It would be nice if it were possible to use Google SketchUp for this purpose? I think as some earlier message this had been suggested.

Sweet. I no longer need to extrude 3dface objects in other software,
nor do I have to make six objects where one will do.

Thank you from Maryland, USA.

as a side note,

your webpage is inconsistent, on the left there is a note which
explains that a little icon appears next to links that lead off of the
fire.nist.gov website, but none of the links on the 3rd party apps
page has that icon.

I believe the "third party tools" page is dedicated to provide easy
access to tools NOT hosted on NIST site. I guess it's quite obvious
that they're all hosted externally and don't really need to have the
"external link" icon you mentioned.

Thanks.

You can first construct a 3D mesh in the CAD environment by drawing
gridlines in space with the desired dimensions and group these lines
into an object. You can then construct your solid models to snap to
the gridlines.

Alternatively, you can setup "grid" and "object snap" (both uniform as
well as non-uniform x, y aspect ratios) features in AutoCAD
environment and construct your solid models to conform to this grid
system, provided you're using World user coordinates system.

3dsolid2fds tool only picks up 3dsolid object and would ignore all
other entities.

Google Sketchup Pro can export to DXF, which is brilliant. The DXF
output contains POLYFACE objects, which can be exploded into 3DFACE
entities. I wonder if this would work with Dave Sheppard's DXF2FDS
conversion tool.

Alternatively, I'm sure we can convert polyface to 3dsolid by
programming and then use 3dsolid2fds to convert the geometry to FDS.

I was involved in a research that looks into converting BIM models
such as that produced by Revit or ArchiCAD using IFC data model. We
were quite pleased with the result, although further work is still
required. At this stage we can only convert single storey buildings
with rectilinear walls.

Johannes, thank you for the link, I will add it ASAP, also, I will be
adding the External Link icons to all the links, I agree that it is
implied by definition, but I do need to add them to comply with NIST
web page policies. So thank you louiea for the suggestion and
catching my oversight.

I am out of the office until next Monday, so the Third Party page will
not be updated until then.
