Hello,

Is there any easy way to measure flame length and flame height of a compartment fire?

Can you please let me know?

Its excruciatingly time consuming process using smokeview

Flame height is obtained as the extension till where the heat release rate is 99% of the total heat release rate of the fire. For doing that, HRRPUL, when integrated till the flame height should equal 99% of the total HRR. I have seen this being told in response to one of the earlier queries. Let us wait for other comments from learned members of FDS community.

Thanks Ashutosh,

But my query is, How can we obtain flame height from FDS. Do we have a device that can do the purpose?.

Have a good day

Yes. Place devices named "HRRPUL" along the flame extension.

Thanks, But I believe to add this device one must be aware of flame length. In my case, I am not sure. How about using HRRPUV (as I know where to expect flames) and then use 99% fraction to determine flame effectiveness?

The flame length need not be known in advance. You can get HRRPUL at any number of points along the flame. Just try using DEVC XB=...,...,...,...,...,..., QUANTITY='HRRPUL', POINTS=...

Thanks. I also happen to find another method where HRRPUV was mentioned with 95%-97% of HRR is considered as Flame lengths

Have a good day
