Hi all,

Having recently switched to FDS-SMV 6, I have come across a new issue that don't know how to fix.  When viewing slice files, the displayed colours appear to be truncated at the top end of the scale (and probably the bottom end also, though I have not tested this).  I have attached two images to illustrate.  Note that only the data scale has been changed.
This is particularly annoying, as I often like to show slices with visibility between 0 and 15m.  When I try to do this, I end up with a graphic that suggests zero visibility, when the data actually shows >15 m in those areas.

Regards,

Craig

Toggle alt-r.  This puts Smokeview (6) into what we call "research mode".  I have a similar issue with temperatures: I always want to see the min and max to make sure I'm not going below ambient.  Trouble is, if we implement that scheme for all outputs that is not ideal either.  Atl-r is a compromise that we think allows you to quickly get the min/max bounds.

you can also use the File/Bounds dialog box to precisely control the min and max of various quantities you are visualizing

I have had this exact issue.  For me the solution is to click shift + T.  I'm a little uncertain of what this actually does, but it seems to change the way the graphics is rendered, and may be related to your graphics card or driver somehow...?  Regardless of the reason, it works for me.

The 'T' character is a smokeview keyboard shortcut (ie nothing to do with the video card).  Pressing 'T' toggles the way interpolation is performed when drawing slice and boundary files.  Suppose x and y are data values and f(x) and f(y) are colors corresponding to these values.  Suppose we wish to find a color corresponding to the interpolated value z=(x+y)/2.

Color mapping method 1:  (f(x)+f(y))/2  map to color then average,
Color mapping method 2 :  f( (x+y)/2)  average data then map to color .

Method 2 is better because colors computed are guaranteed to be from the colorbar.

Appendix C in the Smokeview user's guide documents all smokeview keyboard shortcuts.

A quick way to solve the original poster's problem (issues with min and max bounds) is to press the <ALT> r key.  This toggles the research mode (research mode uses global min and max for coloring data and turns
off axis label smoothing when displaying it.)  You can also use the File/Bounds dialog box to set the data bounds to what you want.

Glenn,

Yes I have heard this before about the researcher mode.  The problem (for me at least, can't speak for Craig who started this thread) is that it doesn't solve the issue.  Refer to attached figures and below step by step explanation of the problem:
1.  If I leave the bounds for my slice file as per the default setting when opening smokeview, everything looks great (see "Slice1" attached).
2.  Changing the bounds (for example wanting my maximum visibility bound to be 15 m) results in strange slice results (see "Slice2" attached).
3.  My understanding from your post above is that, at this stage, I should try alt + r.  Doing this does not solve my problem with the way my slice file is showing (see attached "Slice 3" - bounds have changed from my pre-set value to maximum 30 and minimum 0.15539).
4.  Increasing the maximum bound at this stage to more than 30, eg. 30.1, makes it look ok again (see "slice4" attached).
5.  Changing it to 15 ruins it as per "Slice2".
6.  However, clicking shift + T does result in the slice appearance I am expecting.
