I just wonder how can I manage to draw cylindrical or circular solid
in 3D.

ok thanks Kevin, Pyrosim don't send me a valaible licence number,
waiting for a new one I wanted to try without but it seems to be
impossible...Thanks for the time gain

ok thanks, the matter is that it's impossible to use Burn_away with
sawtooth...

Sadly, PyroSim doesn't have any sphere or cylinder drawing tools
either - though you can get there by doing a rotate-copy on a
triangular section. If you're interested in the surface behavior, you
might want to have a look at Section 8.2.8 of the FDS Users Guide,
Special Topic: Non-Planar Walls and Targets.

Hi Gael-

Another option is to use a spreadsheet program to generate the
necessary text. The link below will take you to an Excel spreadsheet
that I made some time ago. It creates the appropriate text to describe
a vertical cylinder in an FDS domain. You need to insert the cylinder
center coordinates, its length and the step size (dx) of the OBSTs
that make up the cylinder. The cylinder is created from OBSTs that are
'stacked' along the x-axis direction. If you change the cylinder size
or step size, the number of cells that will be filled in will vary.
To use the text, just copy the appropriate portion of the column
marked 'Copy String' and paste it into your input file. You can change
the text to suit your needs. For example, you'll want to change the
sawtooth command as it's currently entered.

It may or may not be what you need, but work with it a little and
you'll see what it does. Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks a lot Tony, your generosity is great !!! I've success in modelise my cylindical sysytem with pyrosim but the conversion in smokeview is very bad...I may use your configuration if I don't manage to use correctly pyrosim, thanks a lot again Tony !!

Hi Tony,

I am trying to use your program to create a vertical cylinder but
hollow. I noted that your cylinder is solid as an obstacle. What can I
do to create a hollow cylinder?

My work is something like jet fire with the following configuration:

cylinder diameter : 1.3m
height: 1.5 m

Inlet fuel diameter is 0.05585 m with mass flow rate: 0.1 kg/s,
direction Z.

That means I would like to create a cylindrical hole for fuel inlet
and a hollow cylinder.

Hello Dr. Shalaby-

The easiest way to do that is to replace 'OBST' in the 'Begin String'
column of the spreadsheet with 'HOLE'. Keep the same center X- and Y-
coordinates but reduce the radius. In other words, you'll construct a
separate, smaller cylinder made of holes in the same place as the
solid cylinder. You may want to make the height of the 'HOLE'
cylinder a little greater (by at least one cell size) than your solid
cylinder to ensure that the hole penetrates the top of the solid
cylinder. You can just paste the text for the hole cylinder below the
text describing the solid cylinder in your input file.

Be sure to visually check the cylinder before you try the jet
simulations (use t_end=0 to generate the smokeview setup without
running the simulation) to make sure that none of the hole sections
have penetrated the sides of the solid cylinder. This type of
construction can be a little tricky depending on the cell size of the
mesh.

Let me know if this doesn't work (or if it does) and whether you have
further questions. I'll try to post an example later today or
tomorrow.

A follow up to the use of the spreadsheet to make a hollow cylinder.
The 'End String' must be changed so that only the '/' character
remains. HOLE does not use the sawtooth or surf_id attributes.

Randy and Gael,

I modified your Matlab cylinder script so that it will generate a text
file for a cylinder of any size and in any location. It creates a
cylinder by rotating a rectangular object through 180 degrees
(similar, I think, to the way it's done in Pyrosim). The user inputs
the center coordinates, the cylinder axis direction (x,y or z), its
length and the mesh cell size. Cylinder surf_id and color have to be
changed in the script. It seems to work, but be forewarned that I'm a
Matlab neophyte. The script is at:

Thanks Randy for your great help, for the moment I don't really have time to test your file, I only focus on pyrolysis process, but I will inform you if I modify anything. What I want is a cylinder so I won't try to make a sphere. I haven't still open your matlab file but I altough have a question : how do you manage to read your m file with fds ?? I admit that I don't see how your cylinder definition via matlab could run with FDS...Please tell me what it's all about using matlab file it would be very useful to me.

Hi Gael,

When you run the scripts in Matlab, both Randy's script and my
modified script should produce a text file in whatever directory
you're working from. Just cut & paste the text from that file into
your FDS input file.

Hello Gael and everyone-

I've posted a new cylinder generator file to the site
http://sites.google.com/site/bovaprojects/ .

The new m-file will generate solid or hollow cylinder at any point and
with axes parallel to the x-, y- or z-axis. Make the hole length
longer than the cylinder to generate a tube, make it shorter to
generate a cylindrical chamber. It seems to work, but let me know if
you find quirks or have suggestions.

Hi tony:

I have already created the hollow cylinder with the following
parametrs:

(s)olid or (h)ollow cylinder?: h
Input center coordinates w.r.t. your domain coordinates
Center x-coord: 0.65
Center y-coord: 0.65
Center z-coord: 0.75
Cell size (m): 0.01
Outer Radius: 0.65
Inner radius: 0.6
Cylinder length: 1.5
Make hole longer than cylinder to ensure that it penetrates,
make shorter than cylinder if only a hollow inner chamber is desired.
Hole length: 1.55
Cylinder axis direction (enter x, y or z): z

It was OK. On the other hand, I have tried to close the base of the
cylinder but let a hole in the centre with radius 0.0279259 m. That
means creating a new hollow cylinder but with length 0.0279259 m and
radius 0.0279259 m. However, I could not see the base cylinder with
small hole in SMOKVIEW.

PS: I tried silid but it is not working it stops after giving Outer
Radius. Only hollow is working.

Hi Dr. Shalaby-

I've posted a new file so that the solid and hollow options should
work (I'd reversed an 'if' and 'while' loop, so the solid option led
to an inf. loop). In your cylinder parameters, I noticed that you
defined the cell size as 1 cm, but your input file resolution is 70
cells to 1.3 m (~1.9 cm per cell). You won't be able to form a small
cylinder at that resolution. I probably need to make it clearer that
the 'Cell size' in the m-file refers to the cell size in your domain.
It's possible that I could do away with the cell size option, it's
there only to define the minimum number of steps as the cylinder
rotates.

Remember, too, that the 2nd and 3rd dimensions of the mesh need to be
numbers that are the product of primes (i.e., 2^l * 3^m * 5^n. This is
because the solver is based on fast Fourier transforms--see page 25 of
the manual), so 70 is not a good value to use. Also, the cylinder
generator assumes a uniform mesh, though this may not be a problem
depending on the direction of the cylinder axis and cell dimensions.

For the scenario you wish to model, you may need a mesh that has much
smaller dimensions (on the order of mm), at least in some parts of
your domain. You may want to post your case on a website so that the
developers can tell you if it's a scenario that can be modeled by
FDS.

Dear Tony,

I have already created the hole cylinder with the new script. It is
working no problem. The problem that I could not see in SMOKEVIEW the
base of the cylinder with small hole in the center. I see only the
hollow cylinder. I have created the base with the following
parameters:

(s)olid or (h)ollow cylinder?: h
Input center coordinates w.r.t. your domain coordinates
Center x-coord: 0.65
Center y-coord: 0.65
Center z-coord: 0
Cell size (m): .02
Outer Radius: .65
Inner radius: 0.029
Cylinder length: 0
Make hole longer than cylinder to ensure that it penetrates,
make shorter than cylinder if only a hollow inner chamber is desired.
Hole length: 0
Cylinder axis direction (enter x, y or z): z

You've defined the length of the cylinder to be 0, but it should be at
least one cell in length. At your current resolution (~ 2cm), the
inner, bottom hole will simply be a square.

A better way to do this may be to make a cylinder with a hole that is
less than the length of the cylinder by at least a cell length
(making a cylinder with a hollow inner chamber, but with solid top and
bottom). Then use the hole spreadsheet to define a hole at the top of
the cylinder (i.e., one of the same radius as the large hole in the
cylinder and that will 'punch through' the solid top) and a smaller
hole at the bottom. If all you need is a square hole at the bottom,
just define one using the HOLE command. If you need it to be truly
cylindrical, your resolution will have to be much higher (sub-
centimetre).

Using a length of .4 as the vertical dimension but a center point of
z=.2 will make the bottom of the cylinder at -0.2, which is outside of
your domain. Try the suggestion above and see if that works. Thanks,

Unfortunately, it fails again. What I need to create a hollow cylinder
with ended from bottom and top but I need a small cylindrical hole
with radius of 0.O2 m at the bottom and the same at the top. Now I see
the cylinder opened from top and bottom.

cylinder diameter : 1,3m
height: 1,5 m

Hello all-

I've posted a second version of the cylinder generator on my website.
In addition to making solid and hollow cylinders, you can now make a
cylinder of only 'holes.'

Dr. Shalaby-- To generate your configuration, make a chambered
cylinder by making a hollow cylinder with a 'hole length' shorter than
the cylinder length, then make a separate cylinder, using the same
center coordinates, that is 2 cm in diameter and slightly longer than
the previous cylinder. Paste both files into your input file.
Remember that your grid resolution will have to be high (small cells,
i.e., << 2 cm) to see the 2 cm hole as a cylinder.
